This week I challenged myself to write a theme inspired by Stardew Valley. The music of Stardew so perfectly sets the tone of the game and helps to paint a picture of the natural beauty of the environment. I tried to emulate those things while also incorporating a touch of the sounds of Harvest Moon and Animal Crossing. I'm incredibly pleased with how this turned out and will definitely be writing my takes on the other seasons in the coming months.

Everything was built from the ground up by me in Ableton Live 11, using my Novation Launchkey Mini and soundpacks by Eastwest and Abletunes.

Since work on the 2nd RandOCtober video is being held up by a couple of little niggles like burnout and covid, here's a little something to tide you over! It's me trying to work out how to write music with 8 random instruments.

Finally another piece for the composition challenge. This time: reflection. She's another character from the story I use for the challenge. She's a virtual idol/bestselling app of a certain company. Her official name is Princess (or Prince, depending on what you "order"), but her creator calls her Frankie.

This week we're headed out into the Sylphlands of Eorzea. The deep purples and mischievous inhabitants helped to solidify the direction I wanted to go: heavy on the woodwinds, and heavy on the whimsy. The specific instruments and voicings were heavily inspired by the 2009 Revival of "A Little Night Music," which has been one of my favorite Broadway albums since I was in college. "I won't let this world exist without me!"

This week I decided to whip up a grandiose JRPG boss battle theme. This piece is heavily inspired by Trance Kuja's battle theme from Final Fantasy IX. The ever flamboyant Kuja is still, to this day, my favorite Final Fantasy character. I have loved their battle theme for as long as I can remember. The pipe organ intro, the exaggerated percussive stomps, the gritty guitars, the jazz organ shredding... I had a blast playing around with these sounds! This piece also utilizes motifs from my "Moonlit Castle" theme from week 1 of this challenge. Art by Vervain

Week 2 of my little composition challenge for 2025. A voyage through the murky waters of a mysterious jungle--and a brush with the denizens who dwell within.

I'm having a blast with this project so far, and I'm learning so much! Everything was built from the ground up by me in Ableton Live Standard using my Novation Launchkey Mini and sound packs by Abletunes and Eastwest.
