Role of cut-outs in Hollow Inconel 718 gas turbine shafts
Gas turbines are commonly known as combustion turbine as an inward burning motor. It includes an upstream rotary compressor combined with a downstream turbine and an ignition unit at the center. Gas turbine shafts collect oil from the area and causing vibrations, thus they are offered with cutouts for reducing vibrations by oil draining. Cutouts are usually round, square or elliptical in shape. Their shape is based on their use. For instance, sewer vents are circular or roundabout. Similarly, plane windows are rectangular with chamfer. In plane structures, specific shapes are located as access points for electrical and mechanical units or for the weight control. Specifically round cutouts are favored due to their simple geometry however there are different designs which provide more advantages over the round shape. The stress distribution near the cutouts and shaft gives an estimate of shape and orientation of cutouts for vibration control in the turbines.
It is found that buckling strength of rectangular laminated composites decreases with increase in hole diameter. Additionally for elliptical cut-outs it is found that buckling strength enhances when loaded in the major axis direction. Round cutout decreases the weight for first and second natural frequencies unlike to elliptical cut-outs. The changes in the frequencies of the panels with and without eccentrical cut-outs was noticed and the variation below 10% was noticed and increased with increase in size of cut-out.
Many authors worked on plates exposed to cutouts and have conducted stress evaluation. However less work is done on the evaluation in a hollow shaft with the use of cutouts. Here a hollow shaft is used and cutouts of different shapes were introduced. Evaluation of shaft with cutout was performed by using it to its plastic limit
Properties of Material
Nickel based superalloy are widely used in gas turbines and combustor components of the motor. They offer excellent resistance to creep and fatigue and can handle elevated temperatures for long duration and prove to be overall very economical. Inconel alloys can also resist oxidation and different types of corrosion and are made for use in vigorous conditions. Application of Inconel 718 up to 650oC is excellent.
The performance of different cutouts and their orientations during application of torsional duration were evaluated. Crack development occurs at shape degradation and crack length increases when component undergoes plastic deformation. Cracks occurred and increased due to tensile stress whilst any cracks in the material are closed by compressive stress. Compressive stress zone and tensile stress zone cannot be found by Von Mises stress. So, it is essential to have better understanding of concepts by using stress graphs.
Maximum principal stress and Von Mises stress are noticed to be 1572 MPa and 1213 MPa respectively. The plastic strain in square cut-out is found to be minimum as compared to cutouts of other shapes. So, it is recommended to use square cutouts with 45 degree orientation in design to enhance the service life of the turbine components.
