fretting over not knowing who the audience is that would listen to the kind of music i’m making lately. feeling like the songs don’t particularly fit any popular genre or niche. i think the solution is to have faith in my melodies. i know that even when i was younger i’d listen to things outside of what i’d normally listen to if the melody was strong enough. think about alien ant farm’s cover of billy jean. who would listen to something that sounds like that if it wasn’t for that amazing melody??? so instead of trying to fit a niche or pander to a particular audience i’m just going to focus on writing good songs/catchy melodies in whatever style is exciting to me. for instance, lately i’ve been feeling inspired to emulate the cure as best i can, without sounding like a clone. the hang up is due to the fact that i’m using a lot of power chords which makes the songs sound sort of alt rock-ish. it can’t be helped. hoping that it just sounds like the cure playing power pop. and more importantly, hoping it doesnt matter what it sounds like because the melodies/songwriting will be good enough to stand on their own.

i wonder what i need to do start writing cooler, more fashionable music. i think i need to find fashionable music that inspires me but i’m so averse to things other people like. it’s difficult. at this rate, the next release is going to sound like jimmy eat world or hoobastank or something. which is fine with me personally but i’m pretty sure it’s corny to most others. i guess the sooner i get these songs done, the sooner i can comfortably switch up whatever it is that i’m doing.
