Proposed Portal post-canon fanfic character: The Computer Guy

Chell is living happy ever after on the surface with her Companion Cube (who is totally sentient and just can’t talk out loud, he does telepathy instead and he and Chell are in love or found family if you ship Chell with someone else instead) and Different Turret and Wheatley and she and GLaDOS are BFFs and hang out on the weekends, and all of those people have various software and hardware issues, so Chell turns to The Computer Guy.

The Computer Guy is an ordinary tech repairman (or it doesn’t have to be a guy but that’s just what I thought of) who for some reason gains Chell’s trust and is exposed to her crazy backstory. And he is honestly kind of freaked out, but he is the best repairman in town, and he feels absolutely horrible for what happened to Chell and her family and wants to do something to help. So he does his best to fix up her gaggle of robots when they want limbs to be able to move around, or get dented, or need Aperture Science mind-controlling software removed. (Chell tries to learn, too, but there’s a lot to learn, and she’s more comfortable having an expert in charge.) It’s a bizarre experience to have the tech you’re working on pipe up with advice or yell “OW!” if you do something wrong (or, in Companion Cube’s case, invade your mind with a steady stream of “thank you thank you new best friend after Chell <3″), and nerve-wracking to have access to the core of someone’s mind, but it’s really fascinating technical work, and thrilling to hear what it feels like for a computer when he fixes it, and wonderful to really help people.

(It gives him a new perspective on his work, and he always solemnly thanks Chell’s gaggle of robots for their trust. He understands what he’s been given.)

Maybe someday Chell will even take the Computer Guy to Aperture to interview (read: GLaDOS is very reluctant to trust another human being, for obvious reasons) for the job of cleaning out GLaDOS’s mainframe - we know there’s the euphoric response to testing in there, and I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a bunch of other junk too.  He’ll get paid handsomely, of course, probably in black holes or something, and even though it’s the most difficult job he’s ever undertaken - what with him having to step out before they start so Chell and GLaDOS can take a moment just in case something goes wrong, and GLaDOS having a panic attack and being just lucid enough to tell him to continue, and Chell holding her head the whole while and reminding her where she is - it’s the most rewarding one he’s ever undertaken.

(He gets a cake for his trouble, too.)

And he turns to Chell and hugs her tightly and lets her know that she doesn’t have to be alone in the human world. with her worries and her secrets anymore.
