Coming up with a language is so interesting and amusing.
I just wrote '(pronounced Frenchly)' next to a word I've created, and out of context, that's faintly amusing. For me, at least

Hi! I'm the author of the @looseleafteeaves blog, and I've been doing all this alderaan worldbuilding. I was wondering if I could include you region parts on my document? I'm not 100% sure everything fits the rules of the language I have so far, but the Toarana is very interesting and I would love to reference it. I can also share a link to my world building so far if you wanted to look before you decided, just let me know!

Hi there! I just finished perusing those documents and your worldbuilding is SO COOL!!! You are more than welcome to use anything you like, and feel free to tweak it to make it fit the linguistics if you like! I always say that fandom work is at its best when it's collaborative 😁
Also, my DMs are always open if you ever want to chat about Alderaan or Alderaanian character headcanons. I have zillions of thoughts and I'd be delighted to hear yours!

Mando Family Values: What the Mandalorian Language “Says” about Parenthood and Family
Mando’a is the fictional language of the Mandolorians. Made up languages are called Con Langs (constructed languages). Think Elvish, Kingon, Doth’raki. It’s not as complete as other fictional languages, in fact, enthusiasts create words for it following the structure so it’s a developing Con Lang. As the language has not been fully developed what words/phrases exist also highlight what’s culturally significant as these are the words the authors needed to use in their stories which developed this fictional culture.
By looking at the structure of the language as well as what words are important enough to be developed, we can get incite into parenthood in Mandalorian culture.
The structure is words are formed by a combination of words. For instance Ad = son/daughter/offspring (as in what you would call your child) Adiik = child (what you would call a child in general). Adate = person.
(side note: Mando’a is also completely gender-neutral. There aren’t gendered words, there’s one word for your child/son/daughter, one word for mother/father/parent, etc. There is a word to denote man or woman but all words and pronouns are neutral.)
Because of this structure, you can identify related words and get a sense of how the word developed. For instance Woman = Dala Female = Dalyc Scabbard = Dalab The root word relates to the anatomy of human cis women, similar to the Latin word vagina which means scabbard, sheath, CASE, hull, husk. The word for "woman" was formed referencing physical shape. Simple.
Now let's examine words related to parenthood. Buir = mother/father/parent Responsibility = buirkanParenthood is related to the word for responsibility. The word for responsibility is made up of the word for a parent and "kan" possibly from 'kando'.Kando = importance, weightThe fact that the word for responsibility is linked to the word for parent illustrates that the culture values parenthood.
Responsibility literally means the parent's weight. The word for adoption refers to an adoption ceremony gai bal manda which literally means name and soul. This highlights both the importance of adoption in Mandolorian culture and family as identity. Your family is who you are - name and soul. To adopt, kir'manir, means give a soul. Soul and name are linked, it’s who you are, the vow of adoption is Ni kyr'tayl gai sa'ad I know your name as my child.
However, as children do not choose their families there is also a legal term for parental divorce by child, which is ‘no longer a parent’.Dar'buirNote, there’s no word for disown. Parents cannot disown their children as the child is their responsibility, however, should parents fail their children the child can leave their parent, severing that bond as they did not agree to birth or adoption as a fully formed adult who can make choices and not bound to their birth or adoptive family. This has interesting implications for the conception of parenthood and relationships.
I’m American and in my country children have been, historically, treated as belonging to their parents. Parents have a fundamental, constitutional right to raise their children even making choices to the child’s detriment (see religions that don’t allow blood transfusions, anti-vax parents, child marriages, forcing children to quit school after 8th grade). America is also the only country that hasn’t ratified The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC).
Parenthood is framed as children have a duty to their parents, to love them, honor them, and obey them. If a parent loses the right to parent due to abuse or neglect it’s not the parent's rights to parents vs the child’s right to not be hurt, it’s the parent’s right to parent vs the state’s interest in preventing harm to children. There’s no process where a child can divorce a parent and free themselves for adoption. At most, when a child is a few years shy of legal adulthood they can petition for emancipation, which makes them an adult.
The way Mando’a frames words, to me, indicates a different conception. Children have rights, parents have a duty.Parenthood is a responsibility to the child, the child is given a name and soul, a connection to family and the parent will forever have a duty to them.
The child is not bound to the parent but is a person, and they can choose to leave their family.
As stated above the word for a person is adate which is formed from the word for child. Children are people, parents are those with a responsibility to the child.
Family is identity. Literally, the word aliit = family, clan name, identity.
But, the saying goes “Family is more than blood.” Aliit ori'shya tal'din. Not just in the sense of valuing adoption as much as having biological children, but in the sense that identity can be found and chosen.
