Some were meant to fall in love
— but not end up together.
If Cody was born years before than Nami, then Nami would be a time traveler.
She traveled to the past to find safety and comfort, and found all of that and so much more in him. She kept her secrets from him so she could selfishly love him without pushing her troubles onto him. The closer he got, the more guilt she felt. She spent so much time focusing on the beauty of their blooming love, but no matter how hard she tried, she couldn't ignore how the thorns ripped into her.
She ran away and broke his heart. He turned away from her and broke her heart. They got back together and mended each others' wounds as best they can but without a doubt, they both know their love was not meant to last.
If Cody and Nami were both actors, then they would meet on a set where they would play lovers.
Both were never very good at finding the right words to socialize with, but they recited the words written for them by others. Each were charmed by the skills of the other and entertained by the chemistry between them. Through these roles, they found the courage to talk to each other.
First it was to just run lines together.
Then it was to eat lunch together.
Then breakfast.
Then dinner.
Eventually they met up just to hang out and be in each other's presence.
Two seasons, twenty seven episodes, and many early mornings and late nights on sets later, he had to leave. They knew they both had to leave but he was the first to go, leaving her to go on playing a character who was missing the one who made her feel whole.
If Cody and Nami were high school students, they would be high school sweethearts.
They met in a class during freshmen year where they were paired together for a project. She went over to his house to work on their assignment on multiple occasions. It proved to be such an enjoyable experience that he offered his place as a study place for her to stop by whenever she needed to. The two bonded over their love for video games and usually ended up playing games rather than studying.
On Cody's birthday, Nami surprised him by taking him to all his favorite places, starting with the local arcade. By the end of the night, he told her she missed a place and took her to his living room where they first worked on their project together. He asked her out and that was when they started dating.
By senior year, they realized that they were heading separate ways after they graduated.
If Nami was dating somebody, Cody would still be her best friend.
They stayed close friends because dating partners come and go, but friends like them are hard to find. They still hung out, still played games together in god forsaken hours in the morning, still had Sushi Fridays together.
Things never felt exactly the same. Cody couldn't freely hug Nami anymore. He couldn't stop thinking of how her girlfriend might've held her better, made her laugh harder, or just made her happier in general. Suddenly, there was more distance between them than before and it killed both of them.
Cody started dating around the same time Nami broke up with her girlfriend. He never knew that he was the reason why Nami went through with the break up.
