Bertone presented the NSU Trapeze concept at the Paris Motor Show in October 1973. A radical rotary-engined prototype with the compact Wankel motor mounted amidships between the rear seats. Designed under Marcello Gandini, the Trapeze was compact at 4.03 m long but wide (18 cm wider than a Porsche 914), allowing the trapezoidal arrangement of the seats.

A design by Tom Tjaarda, the Saab Viking concept was built by coachbuilder Fissore in 1982 based on the mechanics of the Saab 900 Turbo. The design was both innovative and practical, with a spacious interior, but remained a one-off design study.

Presented at the 1970 Turin Auto Show, the NSU Nergal was designed by Aldo Sessano and built by the Turin-based coachbuilder Eurostyle. It was based on the rear-engined NSU 1200, a model whose days were numbered as Volkswagen had just taken over struggling NSU in 1969. With no chance of the Nergal making it into NSU showrooms, Sessano recycled the styling (minus the concealed headlamps) for the Spanish car-maker Seat.

Before Triumph began with the TR series of sports cars, they presented the TRX concept in 1950, complete with electrically operated headlight covers and a hydraulic system powering the seats, convertible top, and built-in jacks. Styled by Walter Belgrove, the TRX was considered too radical, so he designed the TR2 that went on sale in 1953 instead.
