Everything here was meant to be erased. But the wall wonāt forget, and the metal keeps dreaming in rust. Even silence gets tagged eventually.

i donāt know what switch flipped in my brain this week (it really honestly might be that iām making a concentrated effort to have at least a BITE of food before 6pm) but i figured out a LOT of stuff for like... most of my original projects!! and iām feeling very good so i wanna talk about them!!
salt seas - this one i havenāt touched in a while, but i connected a few important character backstory dots to some worldbuilding dots today and now it feels like iāve unlocked the ability to write it again!
concrete ghosts - i want to go whole hog and not only write a few short stories (maybe try my hand at poetry?) but also an essay!! about the concept of how capitalism contributes to modern ideas abt haunted places! bc i am a Super Nerd and i love gathering research/compiling it all into an analysis. idk if this initial idea will have any legs but i get to find out if it does!
edited the first story and have started work on the second :D
nadir - LOTS of plot unlocking going on, including where/how exactly to begin the story, research abt space radiation and plant memory, written ~3k
gloaming - i literally spent all of my lunch break yesterday furiously typing out my evolved ideas for this one. settled on a pov character, tinkered with the worldbuilding and āmagicā systems, basically all of the story beats and character relationships as WELL as a few passes at the first sentence
the only ones that i didnāt much work for are dance to the tune, but that one is already in the second draft stage, and neon, which i havenāt touched since last nano and feel comfortable with it just chilling on the backburner while i work on these other projects, so iām feeling REALLY good!!
MY BRAIN FEELS LIKE MELTED MUSH but! this was a super productive writing day!! wahoo!!
planned out a general scope for that horror/surreal anthology. i want to do a lot of flash fiction pieces, all under 1500 words, about hostile architecture in the sense ofĀ ābuildings constructed with the pursuit of wealth and power top priorityā, a general sort of architectural hubris and the feelings of liminal space hauntings that they can bring with them. i would LOVE to have it done by halloween, and iāve already thought of a great name for the collection: concrete ghostsĀ !
1k for the next chapter of FWS :)
1k for @dovefanworksā FFXV gala commission, and weāve gotten to that GOOD GALA PINING now itās so Delicious
500 words for salt seasĀ ! i have to ease myself back into this project as itās been quite a while since iāve worked on it, but... i just adore being as dramatic and over-the-top as i can. i have so much more fun when i embrace that style itās beyond ridiculous
ok! now iām gonna watch a show that requires approximately 25% brain power and let myself recharge! snippets to come laterrr šš
tagged by @dovefanworks for the first line tag game! iām working on another short story for concrete ghosts:
Murphy didnāt really understand why people would want gigantic, floor-to-ceiling mirrors for closet doors, especially ones that faced the bed ā unless you were into that kind of thing, which they definitely werenāt ā but they didnāt have much of a choice.
technically iām supposed to tag one person for every word in the sentence, but that is much too much work for me. if u see this consider urself tagged
I've already yelled abt it in dms but the mcmansion story was sO good, it had the same chilling, unnerving energies as an episode of TMA or Night Gallery. Your horror is the best in the sense that it doesn't grab you urgently with hooked claws like a slasher or via a jump scare like a haunting. No, yours is a rising action of surrealism and uneasiness that grows in your gut and then, in the final blink, we see the apparition and pray it was a trick of the mind as we close the book cover. 11/10
thank u so much!! and thank u for the opportunity to talk about what i consider effective horror :DĀ
iāve always been more interested in surreal horror rather than gore/splattercore and ESPECIALLY how horror can tie into architecture... the idea that Places Can Go Wrong is so thrilling to me, because itās less about seeing a monster and more about the tingling sensations of being watched or an unnerving sensation in the air. iāve always been drawn to stories of the unknown, where there may or may not be a monster around the corner. the tension, the build-up, thatās where truly effective horror lives. i think the more you define The Horror, be it a monster or surreal architecture, the sharper its outline becomes and the less terrifying it becomes - if you can name it, you get used to it, and if you can see it you can assign it concepts and definitions and outlines and ground it. a floorboard creaking in the dark hallway beyond your room is terrifying because of the potentialĀ horror it holds. which is why shirley jacksonās haunting of hill houseĀ opening paragraph is one of my ABSOLUTE favorite bits of horror writing:
No live organism can continue for long to exist sanely under conditions of absolute reality;Ā even larks and katydidsĀ are supposed, by some, to dream. Hill House, not sane,Ā stood by itself against the hills,Ā holding darkness within; it had stood so for eighty years and might stand for eighty more. Within, walls continued upright, bricks met neatly, floors were firm, and doors were sensibly shut; silence lay steadily against the wood and stone of Hill House, and whatever walked there, walked alone.
the feedback iāve gotten for A GLASS OF WATER is exactly what i wanted to hear: that the terror of the story comes from the possibilityĀ of the fleeting glimpse of a shadow, that maybe the character was making it up or seeing things - but maybe she wasnāt.
and i canāt wait to write more in that vein!
Straight from the soul of the Silent Monk...
