at the risk of sounding like jk rowling, argus 100% grabbed ethan's jacket and brought it back with him
it's 3am and i genuinely forgot to write that into it, but knowing argus he wouldn't let ethan lose one of his favorite pieces of clothing during one of their "games"

When Ethan wakes up it’s to the familiar darkness of Argus’ stomach. How darkness can be familiar Ethan isn’t sure, but he is sure that he’d recognize any part of his friend no matter what. It takes him a moment to stumble to his feet; a combination of the ground swaying with each of Argus’ “breaths” and the pins and needles filling his limbs.
Sleeping through being swallowed and staying how you landed tends to do that to you.
With his arms outstretched Ethan moves around until he finds a wall. It isn’t difficult by any means, but he’d rather not accidentally crash into one and end up back on the “floor”. When he brushes against one he pats at it. Everything stops moving. The floor. The walls. Everything.
Not for the first time Ethan is reminded that his best friend is an alien and doesn’t play by the same rules as him. The uncanny feeling of being completely focused on floods Ethan. Awkwardly raising his hand in greeting, Ethan glances around at nothing in particular.
“Morning, Argus.”
The room shakes as a rumbling purr sweeps through it. Laughter.
“Or... not morning?”
More rumbling.
“Okay, wise guy,” Ethan mumbles, then loudly. “So, how long was I out?”
Wet, squelching sounds fill the air as Argus undoubtedly changes into a form that allows for verbal communication.
“Fourteen hours, give or take,” comes Argus’ voice, sounding far, far too pleased with himself.
“FOURTEEN?” Ethan splutters.
“Yup,” Argus says. “You obviously needed them, man. So I don’t want any shit about me not waking you up.”
Ethan casts a half-hearted glare at his surroundings before letting out a soft sigh, “Okay. Then can I leave now?”
Argus goes silent and Ethan can practically see his pout. He knows Argus’ reluctance to let him out is out of concern for him. Knows that for all his pouting Argus will let him out if he asks. And that’s what lets Ethan slide down to sit against the wall with what he’s sure is an unreasonably fond look on his face.
“You’ve got to let me out sooner or later. I still need to eat,” Ethan goads.
He knows he has Argus when the stomach goes completely still again.
“I hate that humans need to eat so frequently,” he hears Argus grumble at a volume that for anyone else would’ve been quiet.
“Oh yeah, real inconvenient,” Ethan lets out an overly dramatic sigh. “Shame we can’t just have one big meal and be good to go for several years.”
“Honestly the ideal way to do it.”
Ethan laughs, bright and warm, and Argus lets out a rumbling purr. Staying in for a little while longer doesn’t sound like the worst idea in the world.
