I'll start bopping people in the head when they are mean to other persons
The first thing to make clear is that the control of behavior is no invention. It is not something that is created in any laboratory where it is carried out a systematic study . Behavior control were studying though not exist .
Second, it should be noted that the control of behavior does not have to have a pejorative , as it not only applies to "bad behavior " but also , for example, adaptive behaviors .
Third, it is worth pausing to outline the three variants that may present behavioral control :
The innate or unconditioned behavior . You do not need any prior conditions in the history of the particular individual to produce . Its origin lies in the evolutionary history of the species to which the individual belongs (survival of the species -environment ) . The way to control it is to present the right stimulus , because when this unconditioned stimulus (U.S.) is presented then appears unconditioned response (RI) .
Classical conditioning ( Pavlov,1927) . If the unconditioned stimulus (U.S.) we associate a neutral stimulus (EN) a number of times , we get the neutral stimulus becomes a conditioned stimulus (CS) , which cause a conditioned response (CR) .
The operant conditioning ( Skinner,1935) . Here are particularly important contingencies of reinforcement that is, the individual history of the relationship between the behavior and the consequences thereof. On the other hand , it is important that the behaviors and their consequences are not isolated from the world . Hence it is said that operant conditioning has three major elements : the environmental stimulus , response and the reinforcer .
The argument
Alex ( Malcolm McDowell ) is a young man who has two passions : extreme violence and Beethoven . He and his band unload their violent instincts beating , raping and terrorizing the population . When this escalation of terror comes to crime , Alex is arrested . Already in prison , voluntarily submits to an innovative rehabilitation experience (the " Ludovico Technique " ) that seeks to minimize any hint of antisocial behavior . However, this procedure will have a number of negative consequences for Alex . The government then decided to protect it , providing a job and a good position in exchange for his silence .
Clockwork Orange and Behaviorism
The engine of the action in A Clockwork Orange is the current behavioral psychological . The treatment received by the protagonist , Alex , and their effects are framed within this stream.
The psychology of behavior is a current that appeared in the early twentieth century and argues that individuals behave according to the stimulus response pattern derived treatment to change certain behaviors. Within this stream there are two trends : classical conditioning and operant .
Pavlov , famous for his experiments with dogs , was the first to analyze how living things respond to different stimuli. He found that the animals not only respond to physical stimuli ( food) but also made to the neutral ( whistle) . That is, learning through the encouragement of others, in principle, the unconditioned can have the same effect : the dogs salivate only hear the whistle because they have learned that when they hear it means they will feed .
Operant conditioning in turn is based on the following principle : any conduct that in a situation produces a satisfactory result will be more likely in the future in similar situations ( Thorndike's Law of Effect ) . Therefore instrumental conditioning is based on learning a behavior produces a positive or negative result and as a consequence the subject repeated this action or inhibited. Reinforcements or stimuli to which the subject is given may, therefore, positive or negative. The first are the rewards and punishments seconds .
The project presented in the scene Ludovico seen in " A Clockwork Orange " is based on the theories based on contiguity since partnering program works through that , an unconditioned stimulus and its response to a neutral stimulus .
Protagonist is applied to an injection ( unconditioned stimulus ) that gives as unconditioned response , upset stomach . This comes along with images of violence .
Thus, the aim is to associate violence with upset stomach . This project implements the principle of frequency since this experience is repeated for a certain number of days so that the subject does not need the shot to feel upset stomach when violence is presented before him. Therefore, as shown in the demonstration of the effectiveness of treatment, whenever he wants to act aggressively , intensively hurts stomach and can not do .
It shows that the psychological and biological dimensions of the human being can not be closely linked and that Alex is still felt attracted to violence and what prevents you exercise your mind but not your body , given the discomfort you feel in front of her.
Alex gets cured of treatment by a process called flooding ( flooding ) to present classical music consistently without drugs, physical discomfort response is extinguished.
For much of the last century these therapies were applied indiscriminately to all those whose behavior was described as abnormal . But the punishment was then demonstrated that the behavior causes only moves temporarily ( case of Alex ) or to hide behavior. Clockwork Orange leaves us analyzing about freedom of man to choose between being a man be moral or an immoral man and raises the question: we lose our humanity if we are deprived of this choice ? , Is it the beginning anti - remove this human right ?
