Although I typically eat vegan, I broke my diet today to celebrate my Grandpa's 104th birthday. Born February 7th, 1920, Grandpa grew up on a farm on M72 next door to my Grandma Arlene.
After returning from World War II, he and my grandma reconnected and eventually built a home on M22, next door to where I grew up. I am so grateful for all the memories we shared along the bay.
Since my mom and Aunt Kathy had lunch together in Traverse City to celebrate Grandpa's birthday, I did the same. After settling at seat #22 at Woodward Coney, Dominque waited on me and was absolutely wonderful. I can't wait to come back and bring my mom for breakfast when she visits next!
Back in 1938, my Grandma Arlene worked at a Greek restaurant in Traverse City that served hot dogs with a chili sauce- much like a Detroit Coney Island! I simply had to celebrate with my very first Detroit Coney. Can you believe I've never tried one!?
Perhaps this officially makes me a Detroiter. ;)
