Hi! I’ve been a fan of DC since forever but I’m just now getting into Hal Jordan gl specifically. I’ve heard that Geoff Johns kinda fucks up Hal’s character so I was wondering what reading recs you have pre-Johns? :3

Geoff Johns fucks it up via being stupid to the nth degree, as do a few others in modern publication. Older publication fucks it too, but not so egregiously. The Geoff fucking has to do with unashamed watering down of the core ideals that made Hal’s tenure as GL so fascinating and incredibly fun to dig into. Derivative work and discussing stemming from the earlier works and values of those comics, pre-johns, have much more interesting things to say. (I also loathe the white lantern gimmick for Kyle. Loathe it.)

John’s writing is a testament to the political clime that writers like he engage in. Cop supremacy and a power fantasy that doesn’t mean anything. It’s a status quo storyline that has very little variation and ruins the point of Hal. He starts out as a character that 1) gets a DUI and manslaughter charge 2) Air Force dishonorable discharge. His story is marred with a great many complicated issues and hypocritical beliefs due to his upbringing. John’s erases the complicated nature of it. Makes Hal feel disgusting in a way that was never intended for his character and reflects the writer in such a poor way. Sex pest writing.

Anyhow, my recommendations are! Most of the 90’s run written by folks like Marz and at times Gerard Jones. I say read as much as that run as you can stomach and get to the meaty bits that showcase Hal’s heelturn. (Issues 47 through 51 or so. The emerald twilight run) But, before you get ahead of yourself! Supplementary reading that I really enjoyed to show the before of Hal’s extreme backslide as a character would be single issue runs like Willworld by Dematties and Ganthet’s tale by Niven. Read the short run of Emerald Dawn, too. Also, some issues from the 1960 run, like issue 89.

As you jump along the 90s continuity and the other works I’ve mentioned, I do think at times jumping into DC Legends of the Universe (issues 35-38 or so? All the Spectre ones.) there’s also Green Arrow and Flash segments I think very important, too. Like from DC comics presents: green lantern (2004). It show cases a lot the way people think of Hal. Hal’s complicated familial history. The flash bits would be the brave and the bold mini run, that also includes Green Arrow.

There’s also The Spectre to end your tenure with Hal as a character from 2000. Then, the penultimate one is The Last Will and Testament of Hal Jordan.

It’s escaping me rn, but there’s also issues of the flash from Waid’s run with Wally being the Flash that showcase more things about an older Hal. Aside, I hope this pointed you in the right direction. Feel free to comb my tag of him and even @mindshelter ‘s tags to see what to bounce to next. We had a real good time digging into the meat of Hal and associated lanterns.
