❝ i have decided that i will no longer be thinking. not a single thought in this head, from this point onward. ❞
speaking rarely seems worth it, not in the long term, but thinking would certainly be all the more wonderful to opt out of. ( what would life be like? with a little less thoughts, with more of a reliance more on just existing? ) it would be too unvulcan for her to ever truly comment on such things, nor the quiet desire she can only blame on what human blood still lives within her. it would be nice - to just find peace. but such a peace would be only an illusion born from ignorance... it would never be able to last.
❝ sounds a little counterintuitive for a scientist, @conflictaverse. ❞ she remarks instead, clever eyes never seeming to leave him no matter how maeve works to bring up own sentiments without showing too much of thoughts at once. ❝ then whose xenoanthropology papers would I I read then? you're one of the more tolerable voices in the field. ❞

Paul is not, in any way, here to make friends. It's not due to any sense of superiority, at least not entirely, but due also to the fact that he's been through quite a lot in the last couple of years at the hands of others, and he's not exactly eager to open himself up to new people right now.
All of that, and, well, he's not exactly a people person. A fact that doesn't seem to bother some people, no matter how obvious he thinks it may be that he doesn't want to be talked to. So he'll take it into his own hands, he supposes.
He sighs, eyes finally settling on the other man in blue.
"Do you always talk this much?"

her shrug is halfhearted, but truly for all her dejected expression, she’ll be fine. ellie is always fine, in the end, her cheer resilient with the stubbornness of rubber. besides, it’s not on sam’s shoulders to make it up to her. ❛ it’s really okay, really truly. not everyone wants to let outsiders in, I know that. ❜ this is not the first and not the last time a new species had declined to share their music.
❛ there will be others. I’ve got plenty to work on in the meantime anyways, so maybe it’s for the better. ❜ she’s always behind, at least now while traveling with enterprise. when she stays in one place, there’s no new cultures to lure her from her current project.
❝ i want to complain, but i don’t even have the energy. ❞
silence is a common thing with her - the way she takes her time to gather words, to find the right ones, vulcan features more hesitant than human ones yet never quite as blank as upbringing tells her they should be. ( she worries about the others on the crew: cares more than maeve ever attempts to put into words. so she does her best from sidelines to offer what support can also go as ignored as possible. )
so instead replicated coffee is put on table in front of @conflictaverse, not offering a remark yet as nails simply tap on smooth surface. emergencies come && go, they're nothing new out here... yet they're never less exhausting either. ❝ long day? I hear that's been going around. ❞ sympathy lingers in sigh all the same. ❝ you look rough. ❞

waking up in a jail cell had not been on the list of ways she considered the day might end. especially one so dark and dingy and damp. her head aches with a painful throbbing, and it takes beverly a long moment to try and come to terms with consciousness again. she blinks in the dim lighting - about the same time she recalls she had not been alone on the away team. she stumbles to her feet though she doesn't go very far before she hits the flash of a force field imprisoning her within the tiny closet of a cell. she swears at the sting it gives her, numbing her fingers briefly. she peers into the hall, trying to see if the others are near - but she can truly only see across from her.
even then, she has to force her eyes to try and adjust to the dim light. there had only been three of them. herself, the pilot, and -
"sam - get up." she says sharply, realizing now who it is in the cell across from her's. "---wake up. are you alright?"

❛ bit melodramatic, ❜ she remarks, but it's not a criticism and she hides a smile. poorly. ❛ actually, I came to give you a hand. unless you'd rather wallow in your miserable state, that is. in which case, who am I to interfere? ❜ contrary to her words, however, she still slides into a chair beside him, exhibiting no intention of departing.
instead, she offers him the padd formerly tucked under her arm. ❛ I brought you this. thought it might cheer you up. ❜ she had picked it up on comms chatter a few days before, and while their present mission kept them from stopping, she had recorded as much as she could to return to later.
@conflictaverse asked "hey it will be alright."
Pike looked at Sam and smiled somewhat sadly, leaning back he grabbed his glass of scotch and took a drink. "I have to say Sam, that's always been something I've respected about you, no matter what's going on, you have the ability to see the positive." Pike had been dwelling on the future when Sam found him, obviously not able to really tell him what was wrong but appreciated him trying to cheer him up. "Hey, how's your family? I don't think I've asked in awhile."
