The experimental film features archive photographs of Quarry Hill in Leeds, and is the latest test output in my research project into rephotography and hauntology. The fieldwork for my PhD is now complete- the result has been a large corpus of impossible rephotographs, all depicting urban landscapes which no longer exist. 

My problem now is how to present these images in ways which communicate this thwarted rephotographic process, investigate the haunting/affecting qualities of the photographic artefacts themselves and continue to pose those crucial temporal and ontological questions of the medium. 

Here I try to evoke the experience of searching for these lost spaces, the absence of them - the images drift on top of each other, unresolved, unreconciled - though the photographs have been returned to where they came from, they can find no foothold, they are forever in limbo...

Could this be the basis for a final video installation output?

Drowning in Ys (2019) This short film is an audiovisual experiment using feedback and noise on an iPhone. It was made as part of a series of such pieces investigating the hidden strange and spectral nature of everyday machines.  The music from this project is set to be released as a Conflux Coldwell album later this year, called Devices of Atmosphere. That which appears static is the site of change, that which is in motion, remains... I’m busy in the process of adding music videos and relevant short films to my releases on Bandcamp. The video feature is actually quite good. Here is a still from the video for The Metaphysics of Urban Change released in 2016. The album was based on field recordings of the city I made while taking photographs of it under transformation - construction and destruction. I’ve now uploaded the video for Dismantle the Sun (2015) to Bandcamp. This is the piece that set me on the #hauntology path five years ago, which has resulted in several albums, two exhibitions and a PhD. It was originally conceived as a projection work for condemned buildings and is a meditation on transience and memory of place.
