Re: Hugh Laurie on VEEP--they were filming outside my office last week and it seems clear that Hugh Laurie will be playing Selina Meyer's VP and that his name will be Tom James (I gather from the signs I saw).
YOU KNOW THINGS. Thanks for the information! I am very excited for this development.
Damian Lewis, Robson Green, Joshua Jackson

Surprise! My first LORD MERCY. I know, I know. It’s unusual.
Damian Lewis as Major Dick Winters in Band of Brothers is so, so hot to me. I don’t even think he talks to a woman in the whole thing. Or anyone in any kind of romantic or sexual context. He doesn’t talk to anyone much. He keeps that little mouth of his screwed to the side as he works shit out and protects the men serving under him. He’s just so stoic and heroic, you can practically hear the Bald Eagles screech in righteousness every time he strides onscreen. He makes me want to wave flags or possibly make out with flags. I get very emotional about Dick Winters, okay?
(Yo, the real Winters was a good looking dude)
Then there’s Homeland’s Sergeant Nicholas Brody. A desperate, broken soldier whose only real talent was lying his face off. He was a desperate, lost mess. An extremely lethal mess. We watched him through protagonist Carrie Mathison’s eyes and her obsession with him brings him back to life in a way.
Him and Claire Danes had a sexy, scary chemistry. Watching them with one another was watching inevitability. I couldn’t believe how much I rooted for those two crazy kids, even though it couldn’t be more obvious that it could never end well. Yet, they always made you believe that it could.
There’s an amazing episode called Q&A where Mathison questions him for most of the episode and Brody just keeps lying. It’s so painful to watch, because Lewis sells it, he has practically no dialogue, just a lot of repetition, and it’s all in his eyes. There’s just a world of pain there. When he finally cracks, his whole body gives and the relief is so palpable, it burns the screen.
As you can see, it’s Lewis’ acting that absolutely elevates him to LORD MERCY for me. Also, he’s married to the foxy Helen McCrory, so double trouble.

Robson Green got sharp bright little eyes, a receding hairline and plain, aquiline sort of face. He’s got a wonderful comedic sensibility and a natural clown’s easy physicality. So naturally my favorite of his performances and the reason I dig his offbeat looks is the one where he shuffles around, talks enthusiastically about really fucked up shit and blinks a lot.
Wire in the Blood’s psychologist Dr. Tony Hill is sort of a proto-Will Graham. He’s smart, intuitive, overly-empathetic, and deeply eccentric. He’s physically quite contained, all you see is thought process.
There’s a scene (starts at 25:52) between him and his investigative partner D.C.I. Carol Jordan, played by Hermione Norris. She’s wonderfully no nonsense and while she’s in a relationship with a handsome lawyer, she’s inexplicably drawn to the brilliant weirdo she works with, like one does in these things. She’s having a night in with her lover, coolly dictating the terms of their relationship when Tony calls and without any prompting she volunteers to come over and discuss a case immediately. (LOL) The two of them sit on the floor, look at crime scene photographs and talk about dominance and submission. Foreplay! Exquisitely acted example of push and pull in that most unforgiving of framings, the extreme close-up. Even the distractingly stupid tinkling piano in the background can’t ruin it.
If I could write fic for this pairing I would, it was one of those sadly abandoned television relationships and the show never really recovered from it.

I never watched Dawson’s Creek. I tried watching Fringe and couldn’t get into it, even though, in theory it was right up my street. Not sure why Jackson doesn’t register with me. He doesn’t do enough to capture my interest. I know people love Pacey but it wasn’t for me. Snark alone isn’t enough.
