Goodbye
One, two, three, four, las—- both of them pulled back their fingers before they touched the other’s fingers. The two were sitting on the wooden bridge that extends into the sea, their legs were swinging back and forth as they stared at the horizon, watching the sunset. They looked like a perfect couple enjoying a romantic moment but they were not. They were barely friends, they were two people who found themselves unable to tolerate it when the other is disturbed but when they lack disturbance, they would take on that role and bother each other. The reason they were there was simply because Hyosung was in a bad mood and Minwoo came up with the random idea and took her to the sea so she would clear her mind. There was this force that would overwhelm them whenever they were away from each other or when they were close like at that moment. A strange feeling that would start from the tips of their fingers and toes and slowly spread until their hearts are left pounding hard against the hard bars of the cage that kept their insanity from the rest of the body. The two were similar in that neither of them would mention anything about what is going on. The sun pulled its last rays and dived into the other side of the world, leaving the two under the spell of the moon. They got up and walked away from the bridge to sit on the sand where Minwoo set a fire. Hyosung took out her favourite book of poems from her bag and started flipping through the pages.
"I really like this book. It always changes my mood." She paused. "To the better of course." She laughed softly and he smiled at that. "Are you trying to say that talking to me is boring?"
She lifted her gaze from her book to look at him and nodded. “Yes. Yes, you are very boring. Did I fail to mention that before?” He rolled his eyes at her and she had her victorious smile that she displayed proudly. “No, I just wanted to share something that I really liked in this book.”
He lifted his knees and wrapped his arms around them then leaned forward, giving her his full attention. “I’m listening.” She went on and started reading, she was slowing down gradually as if she was thinking of something. When she was done, she looked at him.
"Minwoo…"
"Mhm"
"Can I ask you something?"
"Anything."
"Why does it always feel like Goodbye?"
There was a pause, a long pause. The moon was smiling, the sun on the other side of the world got the news and just sighed. No one could escape the moon’s spell. Minwoo finally spoke.
"It’s always a Goodbye."
