Loss at a Living History Museum

Step through heavy doors, breathe deep - summer air chilling around you - and travel back in time. • You are a Lenape woman, and a White woman too, torn between two worlds as statehood threatens everything. You fear a growing world and the change it brings your family. You weave baskets and reed mats for walls and dream of your mother. • You've travelled from Pennsylvania with grief as your companion to meet your mother - "widow" a name you share. You bake German cookies and think of the life you meant to have. You are comforted by neighbors, your three brothers, and each guest at your family's inn. • You are an engineer, one of four women in your class, thrilled by the promise of flying cars and a man on the moon. You and your little brother build new machines, launch rockets, and talk about a future your father will not see. • Your heart - whether it lives in 1816, 1836, 1958, or 2016 - will always know loss. You travel back in time and live each life to learn how to go on.

It has occurred to me that I’ve never shared some of my local attractions on here! If you’d like to see a slice of a Midwestern Halloween, check out this video of the Headless Horseman festival at Conner Prairie, a “living museum” depicting life in the 1800s. It’s a lot of fun! Queue and ride section start at the 9:30 mark. Don’t skip the queue section, as it features love actors and a fun song to catch people up to speed on the Horseman’s legend.
