Danny takes you for a surprise hayride because you’ve never been on one
this was written for @fredhechingerfrenzy FREDTOBER! october 5th prompt was "hayride". dividers made by me!
“Where are we going?” You asked for the tenth time in the last fifteen minutes. Danny smiled, eyes scanning the rearview mirror. Flicking on the right turn signal in his car, he made a quick right turn followed by an even quicker left turn onto a slower and quieter street lined with auburn colored trees. The wind blew slightly, shaking the trees that lined the road, the sound of rustling leaves filling the small car as he continued to drive down the road.
“It’s a surprise.” He smiled, glancing at you quickly before his eyes made their way back to the road in front of you.
“I hate surprises,” you reminded him, crossing your arms over your chest gently as you leaned back in the passenger seat. You hugged your body tightly, the cool autumn breeze outside of the car making you grateful you threw on an oversized black sweater for the day. The breeze ran through the slightly cracked car windows, the smell of dry leaves lingering in your nose as you looked over towards Danny.
“Yeah, well, I’m really hoping you’ll like this one,” Danny said, making one final right turn before he pulled into a dirt parking lot. He drove through the rows of cars, pulling into an empty spot before throwing the car in park. He turned to you with a huge grin on face, his hand patting your knee gently. “Surprise!”
You looked at him and raised an eyebrow before looking around outside of the car. “Where are we?” You asked, looking for any indication of where you were. There was none—just some cars and some people walking around hand in hand laughing and joking with each other. Occasionally a bird flew by in the sky and some leaves fell from the trees as the wind blew gently. Just the normal indications of fall and the cooler months approaching.
“The pumpkin patch,” he replied, undoing his seat belt.
“The pumpkin patch?” You asked, unbuckling yourself before you opened the door. “We already got pumpkins this year, Danny.” You reminded him softly.
“That we did, baby girl,” Danny replied, hopping out of the car. He rounded the back of the car and helped you out before he closed your door carefully. “But, when we got those pumpkins you mentioned that you had never been on a hayride,” he said, grabbing a soft, fuzzy blanket from the backseat. “So I, being the amazing and wonderful boyfriend I am, decided to take you out on a date. A hayride date.” He tucked the blanket under his left arm, his right hand extending out to your left one. Grabbing hold of your hand gently, your fingers instinctively interlaced with his as he led you towards the spot for hayrides.
“You really went to the trouble of planning a hayride for me?” You asked, a small smile forming on your face at the thought.
“Well, yeah,” Danny smiled, squeezing your hand gently. “It wasn’t that hard, I just looked at the times they usually have hayrides and found a time that would work for both of us.” He smiled, leaning in to place a soft kiss on your cheek. “And, this one is so much fun. It goes through the apple orchard and the pumpkin patch and you get to see all the trees changing colors and it’s just, I really hope you’ll like it.” He replied, stopping in front of a hand painted sign that read Hayrides the white paint was fading and chipping against the weathered wooden sign—a true indication that these rides have been going on for as long as anyone could remember.
He helped you up onto the little tractor and took a seat on a bale of hay, motioning for you to sit beside him. You took a seat beside him, your body pressed against his as you looked at him and smiled. “This is pretty cool,” you mumbled, your head resting on his bicep gently as you looked up at him.
“It is,” Danny nodded, carefully placing the blanket over both of your laps. He shifted slightly, his arm wrapping around your waist before he tugged you a bit closer. You readjusted, head leaning on his shoulder as your hand found his thigh under the blanket gently. “It’s really peaceful too,” he mumbled against your hair gently.
His fingers traced soft circles on your hip, his grip on you tightening gently when others stepped onto the tractor to find their own spots on the bales of hay. Across from you both sat a family with two smaller children—a boy and girl that appeared to be twins around the age of four or five. They bounced up and down excitedly as they waited for the tractor to begin its descent into the orchard.
Dressed in matching black sweaters with tiny white ghosts and orange pumpkins stitched into the seams, their little hands played with the bales of hay as they waited with their parents. They were restless, beyond excited to see the orange and brown leaves, the red apples, and the pumpkins on their little adventure.
“They’re really cute,” Danny smiled, placing a soft kiss against your hair as he murmured to you softly. “And they’re so excited,” he added, pausing for a second. “I can’t wait until we can bring our kids out to do all of these fun fall activities. Dressed up all cute and festive as we all have fun as a family.”
“You want kids?” You asked, pulling away from his shoulder slightly. You looked up at him, seeing the twinkle in his eye as he spoke about the future, about your future together.
“Well, uh,” he stuttered, realizing this conversation had never really come up. “I would be open to kids in the future, you know, if you wanted to have kids… with me, that is,” he stumbled out, looking at you with a nervous smile on his lips.
“I would love to have your kids, when the time is right,” you mumbled, leaning in to place a soft kiss on his lips. He smiled, pulling you closer to him as his lips moved against yours.
“Mommy, look! They love each other!” The small girl sitting across from you giggled as she pointed over to you and Danny. Her brother made a face, sticking his tongue out in a fake gag as he witnessed the kiss.
“Yes, honey, they do,” the mother said softly, grabbing the little girl’s hand carefully. “But, let’s leave them alone and maybe not point at them, please. It’s not nice.” She added, shooting you and Danny an apologetic look.
You smiled at her, resting your head back on Danny’s shoulder. “I don’t know, you might not be able to handle a child.” You teased, looking up at Danny.
“Hey, I would be perfect, thank you,” he said softly. “And, anything I’m not perfect for you will be perfect for.” He added, kissing the top of your head as the tractor slowly creaked to life and began its movement.
“Mhm,” you hummed, glancing at him before you looked at the trees now moving around you slowly. “We’ll see,” you added, referring to the conversation of kids. “We’ll talk about it more later, for now, let’s just enjoy our time here.”
“Sounds great,” Danny agreed, his fingers rubbing against your hip gently.
