On 16 July, 1952, 10-year-old Connie Smith had an altercation with her fellow campers at Camp Sloane, Connecticut. She claimed she was going to the camp’s dispensary to return an ice pack she had borrowed for her bloody nose but she decided to just leave the camp instead.
Multiple witnesses claimed to see Connie asking motorists for directions to Lakeville, which was nearby. The last reported sighting was of her hitch-hiking on US Route 44. Connie’s grandfather, who was governor of Wyoming, set up an extensive search but it was unsuccessful.
The case seemed to go cold until 1958 when hunters in Arizona discovered skeletal remains of an unidentified child, who became known as “Little Miss X”. In 1962, the Connecticut State Police received an anonymous letter which claimed that “Little Miss X” was actually Connie.
Their dental records were compared but the results came back inconclusive and the remains of “Little Miss X” have since been lost and the fate of Connie Smith remains a mystery.
