A happy day of freedom thirteen years from now to D:BH's androids!
I will never not adore the game's best ending to bits. It ends so surprisingly happily for everyone involved. Also, as I was putting together the pictures for this post, I realised that all three of the Playables, as I've started to refer to them, can have their own story arcs of realising different kinds of love if you go down the routes for this best ending.
Markus and North fall in love with each other in the romantic sense and become a couple, resolving to be there for each other during the changes in society that are about to come from them achieving their shared dream. Kara's protective motherly love for Alice steadily grows, until ultimately it becomes the thing that fuels their escape to a better life together. And Connor comes to see Hank as a father figure and loves him accordingly in a similar familial sense to Kara, though in Connor's case it's the reverse because from him it's like a son's love.
In addition, North, Alice and Hank are all foils to each other in terms of the scale of the species dynamic with their respective Playables. North is introduced right from the offset as being another android and is therefore in a lot more of the same boat as Markus, we're initially led to believe that Alice is a human until it's later revealed that she's an android, too - meaning her species dynamic with Kara is in an interesting middle ground - and we know from the start that Hank's a human, which is obviously the main source of his and Connor's diametrically opposing natures that form their buddy cop connection.
This is my favourite video game to date, which I had to start replaying today, and so here's my contribution to mark this important in-universe day. 💙
