Conrad knew Mason had gotten used to Pru being around in the house, but her moving in was going to be a different experience, and he wanted to check in and make sure his little brother was okay with it. He was being more conscious about checking in, knowing that was something he’d been bad at in the past.

“Hey . . . you have a minute?” he asked, lingering awkwardly in Mason’s doorway.

Conrad felt like he needed to apologize to Victoire considering his state of being the last time he saw her. He’d been a mess. He stepped into the station on his lunch break, looking around for her and hoping she hadn’t left for lunch already.

Conrad sighed, nodding absently. "I know. That's . . . that's good. Thank you. I just . . . I feel sick. I feel like I can only get better if I drink. I know that's wrong. I just . . ." He swallowed hard. "I don't know how to do this."

Conrad exhaled shakily, glancing sidelong at Lance. "I don't . . . I know I should talk about it, but I-I don't know how." He bit his lip. "How did you get past that part?"

Conrad looked up at Mason, swallowing hard. "Do you hate me?" he asked softly, not moving from the curb just yet. "I-I know I've been a bad brother. I've neglected you. I've let you down. I-I want to get better."

Conrad bit his lip as Pru sat next to him, but he didn't push her away. He knew he had to stop doing that. He gave her hand a squeeze. "I want to so badly, which makes me feel guilty," he admitted softly. "I don't want to disappoint you again."

Conrad felt embarrassed still from his unfortunate encounter with Prudence earlier that day. He was definitely sobering up and sat on a bench facing the lake, elbows on his knees, hands clasped between them, deep in thought. He blinked out of it when he saw Kirby. He’d been meaning to speak to them. Shaking his depressing thoughts away, he stood and hurried over.

“Hey . . . you’ve been really quiet at work. I’ve been meaning to talk to you about that. Are you okay?”

The very last thing Conrad wanted was for Victoire or Pru to see him drunk. But now Vic had seen him. His control was unraveling. But he couldn’t let Pru see him like this. She would surely end up hating him after seeing him messy and stumbling and near-suicidal. He’d done his best to not let it get out of control, but then the earthquake shook that resolve. He’d been so scared. He was a coward. And cowards drank.

“No. No. No. Shit.” Spinning away from the door, Conrad stood, hastily trying to make it to the bathroom before Pru could see him. Why was she here? She never came to the Sasquatch. He misjudged the distance and slammed his head against the doorframe of the bathroom entryway. He stumbled back into a chair and table with a crash.
