Thought & Opinions – Who won this generation?

Looking back through the annuls of gaming, it's fairly easy to see what console 'won' a particular generation.

Here's a quick run down:

First generation: Er...pong things?

Second generation: Atari 2600

Third generation: NES

Forth generation: SNES

Fifth generation: Playstation 1

Sixth generation: Playstation 2

You could probably debate these if you tried hard enough, but I think most people would agree on this list.

But the seventh and current generation of consoles? That's a tricky answer.

In terms of raw sales the Wii wins hands down.

Between the Xbox 360 and the PS3, the 360 wins out in sales, but not by a huge margin. Also, depending on the region, Japan for instance, the PS3 wins out over the 360 at almost 10 to1. Even in Europe as a whole the PS3 has out-sold the 360 by a small margin.

So, the USA loves the 360, Japan loves the PS3 and everyone else like the two consoles about the same.

But every loves the Wii...right?

Wrong. Simply, gamers by and large, still view the Wii as 'not a proper gamers' console. It's all about the 360 vs. PS3 rivalry.

So, in years to come, when statistics are batted around the Wii may be the console that's sold the most, but it won't be considered the console that 'won'. I think that decision will depend on where you live.

Here's my view on what each region/country will say:

USA: Xbox 360

UK: Xbox 360

Japan: PS3

Europe (as a whole): PS3

As a side note it's interesting to note that the amount of games sold per console, sometime referred to as the 'Attach Rate' is around 8.1 for the 360, 5.3 for the PS3 and 5.5 for the Wii. Though figures vary wildly depending on the source.

By this token the 360 wins, as the money to be made in consoles isn't really in the consoles themselves, which tend to loose money on every one sold but in the games you buy for them. This said, as this generation has gone on the parts have got cheaper and therefore manufacturing costs have decreased slightly but probably not enough for huge profits to be made. The next generation consoles will almost certainly be sold at a loss.

So who is the real winner of this generation?

As ever with videogames, it's quite hard to say for sure, and it's really a matter of opinion...and opinions are what cause arguments!

There has been a lot of talk over the last few weeks of The Last Of Us being the best game of this generation.

I personally am half way through the story and think the game is a masterpiece.

Activision Boss Predicts Rising Game Development Costs

Activision CEO Bobby Kotick says every new console generation has resulted in higher development costs and this one will be no exception.

We may not know exactly what the next generation of game consoles has in store but we do know that it's coming soon, and however it works out the big dog at Activision says the cost to make games for it is almost certainly going to go up. "This is my twenty-second year doing this, and every single console transition we've seen an increase in development costs," Kotick said in a post-earnings call to investors. "Over long periods of time it gets smoothed out, but I would say this is not a transition where that's going to be an exception." "We're going to have to figure out how to take advantage of the unique abilities of new hardware and that requires new skills and investment in tools and technology and engines and so yes, that's likely," he added. Kotick's comments have a bit of an ominous ring to them, in that they could be an early hint of higher game prices in the next console generation. Activision recently reported revenues of over $4.8 billion in 2012 so it's not as though it can't afford to eat some rising expenditures, but it didn't get to where it is today by being a charity. On the other hand, Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick expects development costs will stay more or less flat into the next generation. "We don't have any reason to believe our dvelopment budgets will change significantly," he said. "If anything we have become - group-wide - much tighter in terms of how we spend our money. We can't say specifically, but no, we don't expect to see a meaningful change in what it costs us to release these top quality products."

With rising game development costs and company's like Activision concerned. It appears that other platforms are apt to take the lead in stand-alone indie projects all the way to AAA game titles. Certainly, if we were to look at the amicable Kickstarter campaigns boasting Linux support and the community influenced decisions to do so. There would seem to be a major change coming in the gaming industry. Activision may be looking to put forth the effort to take their games beyond meer consoles and broaden the PC-based landscape. What do you think?

What we missed was a new console every five years,” he said. “We have been penalized by the lack of new consoles on the market. I understand the manufacturers don’t want them too often because it’s expensive, but it’s important for the entire industry to have new consoles because it helps creativity. It’s a lot less risky for us to create new IPs and new products when we’re in the beginning of a new generation,our customers are very open to new things. Our customers are reopening their minds — and they are really going after what’s best. At the end of a console generation, they want new stuffs, but they don’t buy new stuff as much. They know their friends will play Call of Duty or Assassin’s Creed so they go for that. So the end of a cycle is very difficult.
