Aaa!! Thank you <3 I listen to a lotta stuff! Like Bubblegum pop (like Sugar Sugar by the Archies) and rock (like the Beatles & Oasis) and I have a playlist for songs from musicals :)

i was on Sam Reich's instagram live and i just have to say. the One time he reacted to the multiple people asking him "Now Sam where are you from?" in the midst of all the samalamadingdongs was quite likely in response to the time that I asked that question.

one of my favorite things about a lot of different musicals is when they have their opening number reprised in their finale, the same melody and lyrics having an entirely new meaning to them thanks to the context of the rest of the show.

and obviously there are a Ton of examples (Wicked, Come From Away, The Outsiders, SpongeBob... i know there are others i can't think of them), but there are two specific shows that I genuinely think are examples of the absolute best use of this.

to me, those two examples are Cabaret and The Great Gatsby.

like the other examples listed, each time this sort of thing happens, there is new meaning given to the same song thanks to the rest of the show happening in between, but both Cabaret and Great Gatsby have it in like... a very chilling way.

In Willkommen and Roaring On, these are both somewhat upbeat songs, introducing the club, the parties, the energy that the audience is Supposed to feel at this point. nothing else matters in the world, only the thrill of endless entertainment.

but this isn't what these shows are about. there are much darker stories going on underneath, and by the time we get to the finale, the audience is changed along with the characters - but the song is the same. Nothing else Matters. only the thrill of Endless Entertainment. We have No Troubles Here.

but another thing that i find so musically fascinating is that it's not just the audience's perception of the song that changes, no the music itself helps to drive the audience to those realizations. at the orchestra's break in Willlkommen (finale), it begins very similar to the opener, but gradually adds more and more dissonance, making it harder and harder to even bear listening to. In Roaring On (finale), the ensemble lines are just slightly more staccato, slightly more dissonance, slightly more unnerving to listen to.

it's just so fascinating to watch a musical, and have the same song mean something so incredibly different, just because of the context it exists within, and very slight musical changes.

man i love college houses. there's at least 2 different gaming systems in every living room. there are no more than three matching plates and there are even fewer matching cups. there are mismatched couches that are either more comfortable than your bed or physically painful to sit on. the kitchens are full of more appliances than they can physically fit. you have to open the oven to get to the measuring cups. either the washer or dryer will work (not both). you'll either be laughing with friends for Hours straight or having a literal panic attack. there is no in between.

#also every college house ive been in has had at least One record player and a decent collection of records #(my collection is pretty small actually. but ive only been collecting for a year and i dont have super steady income)#but i Will admit that most of my friends are jazz musicians so that part may not be accurate for others lol #constance speaks #some of this is true about my place some of it about some of my friends #my friends place has had a different arrangement of their living room Every time ive been there.#there is never the same number of couches there as there was last time.#my kitchen has a pasta maker and fruit juicer (the giant one with the handle you squeeze down on) but not a toaster.#there is a fully functional typewriter on my friends kitchen table.#there is a life sized plastic skeleton on my living room couch.#what a weird time of life we're all in. sometimes its really great sometimes you want to kys.#but ultimately. we're all here. we're trying to get through the rough times so that we can enjoy the good times.#and even if we're only in each others lives for a few short years (god i hope its for longer than that) by god it's gonna be a good time

#constance speaks #actually just got offered an 'almost job' where its not technically a job but im getting paid so close enough #(its a 'fellowship' technically)#and im in the process of applications/interviews for another one.#im mostly trying to do remote work stuff. but i got offered and interview for the one in-person thing i applied to.#which takes place in the same building that im always in lol.#we'll see just what the hours will be like. bc thats really the determining factor for this one haha.#(also i uh. have a concert right after this job interview so. hopefully it doesnt go too long. or i might be cooked)#(my call time will probably be an hour after the interview starts. but i dont see any reason why the interview will take that long.#no one is applying to these jobs)
