Just found this term and it explains a lot of the confusion I had with shifting fictionkin identities, I love this term and the whimsy of the word "stel" so much :3

How does one tell the difference between a stel and a kin type?

Similarly, how does one tell the difference between a stel and a link type?

From what I've read constels can be voluntary and involuntary, but how do I tell the difference between an involuntary constelic identity and an otherkin (or therian) identity? And how do I tell the difference between a voluntary constelic identity and an otherlink identity?

Am I still valid as a constari if I feel my constels are permanent? Yes, I did pick up most of them at some point in life, but they feel permanently a part of me. They used to fade in and out, but now they seemed to have stayed. Some are even strong to the point where I can't separate them from my personal identity

yeah!!!! all that is needed is what you described- having picked them up at some point. what they do after that is just a bonus, and doesn't invalidate your constelic identity!

how does one form a stel?

oooo, that's a tricky one. I think it varies a lot from constari to constari. I'll describe my own personal experience, but I appreciate if anyone else could chime in!

For me, stels form when I latch on to a certain concept/species/creature/etc., mostly as an ADHD thing. I'll just sort of starting thinking about it a lot, want to create art about it, and eventually start associating it with myself.

Alternatively, I sometimes skip straight to experiencing nonhuman characteristic one day, and have to trace it back.

As to intentionally developing a stel- I'd imagine you do the same steps without the involuntary attraction to the idea. I wouldn't say I 100% choose to start a stel, but I definitely guide stels when they form (normally by going "mm nope don't like this aspect cut it out" and normally that gets my brain to back off).

Small question, but is it possible to get memories from stels? or is that just not really possible?

I don't see why not! Stels can have all the stuff say, a kin could have, even though they are considered less permanent. I haven't had them, but I think that's just how I am, not from my constelicness.
