They walked through the street filled with curiosity. Why were there so many pumpkins? They were told those were food, but these have faces carved into them, and they're being left outside. There's so many decorations that weren't here before, and they're kind of scary looking. A familiar face greets them as he normally does, walking up from behind them and matching their speed.
He speaks plainly, "there's a holiday coming up, the decorations are for that."
As usual, he knew exactly what they were going to ask before they did. They always found that odd, but he would never tell them how he did that. They don't really know anything about him, they never really asked.
They speak as they look at one home's decorations, "what's the holiday celebrating?"
Their friend shrugs as he speaks, "nowadays it's an excuse to dress in costumes and eat a ridiculous amount of candy."
"What's candy?" they ask as they look at their friend.
He takes a piece of chocolate out of his coat pocket and holds it out to them. He always has something relevant in his pocket.
"How do you always know what I'm gonna ask about?" Corvi asks, tilting their head to one side.
"It's complicated...this particular candy is called chocolate," he says, offering one of his rare smiles.
"Chocolate?" they ask, smiling as they take the chocolate, reading over the wrapper curiously.
They pop the treat in their mouth after fumbling with the wrapper for a moment. They've never had something this sweet, but they like it! They smile at their friend as he eats a piece of candy himself.
Corvi speaks first, "It's so sweet!"
Their friend nods with a smile, "candy often is, but not always. I'll show you later, I've got something else to show you."
Their friend leads them to a small cabin just outside of town. The forest surrounding it is quite dark, despite it not being night, but it seems their friend put up lanterns to help them see. As they enter the small home they're met with a comfortable warmth as a fire blazes on the wall of the living room. They'd never seen a fireplace before, but their friend told them about how humans like fire to keep themselves warm. Now that they think about it, it was quite chilly lately. And the leaves have been changing color, but they weren't sure why. They sure were pretty though. Their friend enters the room with a box in hand, holding it out to them.
He smiles as he speaks, "it gets cold this time of year, I thought you could use one."
They nod as they open the box, revealing a similar coat to their friend's. A long coat that would go all the way to their ankles. As they unfold it they notice something interesting, the inside of the coat looks like stars. It reminds them of their time before they fell to Earth. The stars aren't sewn in, they move independently of the coat, like another universe. They look at their friend curiously. He offers a smile in return as he pulls his coat open to reveal a similar star pattern.
"Consider it my personal brand of magic," he says with a knowing grin.
They don't know how he did this, but they smile as they put their new coat on. Their friend grins as he steps closer.
"Now, do you want to participate in a fun holiday tradition?" he asks with an unusual glee in his voice.
"What type of tradition?" they ask, putting a hand on their hip.
Their friend motions to a doorway down the hall, "humans will wear costumes for the day, there's a wardrobe in there with a few I think will fit you."
"Why wear costumes for the day?" they ask curiously, moving to the doorway.
"Ah, it started not too far from where you fell. They would wear costumes to ward off evil spirits," he says with a smile, "I think it's fun."
They smile as they look through the wardrobe. Thanks to their friend they actually understand what the costumes are supposed to be. They pick out their favorite and quickly put it on. They slowly peek out of the room to try and see if their friend has his back turned. It seems he's decided to sit on the couch. They grin as they try to sneak up on him, slowly approaching before throwing their arms in the air and jumping into his view.
"Boo! I'm a ghost!" the sheet they're wearing is kind of hard to see out of, so they can't tell if they successfully spooked their friend.
His laughter is enough to make them start laughing as well. They adjust the sheet of their ghost costume so they can see again, and smile as their friend nods approvingly.
"Very spooky, now let's go get some more candy," he says, standing.
They like this new holiday.
