Block Selection Based On India’s Diverse Climate Zones

Construction Blocks

While constructing a home, a lot of time is spent on deciding the design and the budget. One of the main factors that affects every material decision is the local climate. Local climate directly affects how your materials perform over time. Choosing materials based on your local weather conditions improves durability and reduces maintenance.

Choosing the right materials ensures that the structure remains safe and sound across the seasonal changes without the need for repairs. Seasonal changes like humidity, heat, and rainfall put constant pressure on the roof, walls and the floor of your house. If you select building materials without accounting for these, then your home will have problems like leaks, cracks, or poor insulation within a few years.

Materials for a cold and wet climate

In the northeast India and high altitude regions, the climate is cold. Homes need to resist frost, retain warmth and withstand heavy rain or snow. Moisture should not seep into the homes.

Insulated panels and wood are natural poor conductors of heat and retain warmth indoors.

Fibreglass insulation offers high thermal resistance and is used for roofing and walls.

Concrete with an insulated framework (ICF) provides the structural strength of concrete and the required thermal insulation.

Materials for a hot and dry climate

In India, there are many regions where summer is intense, and the sun heats up the structures for months. In such regions, the priority is to prevent the heat from damaging the home's integrity and to keep the interior cool.

Top materials

The Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (AAC) blocks are lightweight and porous. They absorb heat slowly and release it gradually, which helps to stabilise the interior temperature.

Traditional choices like stone and clay have been used to build homes in the hot climate for centuries. They help to maintain the indoor temperature.

Reflective roofing materials like metal, stone chips and membranes are used to reflect the sunlight away rather than absorb it.

Marble flooring keeps cooler underfoot naturally than wood or tile.

The best type of cement for hot climates is the Portland Pozzolana Cement (PPC). It prevents cracking due to expansion, especially after curing.

Most regions in India experience multiple climate changes, from hot summer to heavy monsoon, followed by cold winter. Before you decide to build a home, look at the location’s climate changes. Match your materials choice to those climatic conditions. Good construction is about choosing the right materials in the right place.

Building blocks

The green building blocks are manufactured using an advanced autoclaving technology, which gives them superior quality. They are a sustainable replacement for the traditional red bricks. The construction blocks have excellent consistency and have a compressive strength of 4.5 MPa.
