One of my favorite ways to practice #violinshifting is to omit the note before each shift and play as if the composer had written the passage this way. Omitting these notes temporarily trains the shift to arrive on time and smoothly. It also organizes the underlying shifts within each run so the first finger knows exactly how far it needs to go. This composition was commissioned by Daniel Bennett, principal flautist of the Band of HM Royal Marines Portsmouth whom I met at the Royal British Legion Festival of Remembrance in 2016.
