By stopping eating too late and having a warm soak before bed will trigger cooling mechanisms in the body. A falling body temperature is an important driver of sleep, as you cool you will relax.
Avoid exercise immediately before going to bed. It's a much better idea to do some gentle stretches, or even yoga before hitting the covers. You should also consider investing in some quality black out blinds or curtains, as well as using ear plugs. The less light and sound there is will allow you to drift off to sleep naturally without any distractions. Its also important that you remove any tech items such as computers or TV's from the bedroom. Studies have shown that sleep can be significantly affected by interference from electrical devices.
Also checking your emails and latest facebook posts before bed will actually stimulate the brain, and can even cause stress. Just as your brain should be heading to the sleep mode.
