Context Alters Meaning statement
This assignment motivated me to really think about how the placement of a piece can alter/add to the meaning. My approach to this assignment was simple, I wanted to capture the piece in places you wouldn’t really expect a 2-D art piece to be, while in some cases trying to be sort of comedic about it. Some of the images taken relate to the actual subject matter and ideas of the piece while others are farther from it but add a different perspective to it. Of course I kept in mind the actual assignment of bringing the piece to contradictory and associative places. I thought at the end of this process the work would be destroyed (I was not gentle with it) which would have added some meaning to it but it’s still intact and even still I think this sort of adds the idea of the medium being resilient even though it is only paper...a degradable,(usually) fragile item. At a point it was hard for me to distinguish the difference between the two. I was thinking by bringing an art piece out of the “formal setting” of say a gallery, into the general public; isn’t it all associative?-- In the aspect that when it becomes “public” you always have an audience as you would in a formal setting. Overall I like a lot of the images and videos I was able to capture in pretty much all ways they have that aspect of the unexpected.
