Another 737 flashback, this one is of a Continental Boeing 737-500 at the gate at El Paso International Airport back in 2008. The resolution of my point-and-shoot back in those days doesn’t allow me to determine the tail number of this particular aircraft. Ironically El Paso was one of the original destinations of Continental Airlines. But first we have to zip back to 1925 when aviation pioneer Walter T. Varney got one of the first air mail contracts and set up Varney Air Service in Pasco, Washington, to fly air mail between Pasco and Elko, Nevada via Boise, Idaho. Varney gradually expanded his operations in the West Coast before selling his airline, the Varney Air Group, to United Aircraft and Transport who changed the airline’s name to United Air Lines in 1933. Walter Varney headed east and with his business partner, Louis Mueller, set up a new airline in 1934 as Varney Speed Lines to connect El Paso, Texas, to Pueblo, Colorado, via the New Mexico cities of Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and Las Vegas. In 1936, they brought on a new manager to run the airline, Robert F. Six, who eventually assumed controlling interest in the airline in 1936. Six renamed the airline as Continental Air Lines and moved its headquarters from El Paso to Denver. Six would become one of the iconic airline leaders of the jet age and stayed at the helm of Continental from 1937 to 1981. I always found it ironic that United and Continental merged given that they were founded separately by Walter T. Varney.
