It was almost jealousy, if he was not barred from feeling its full extent it doubtlessly would be. Frank had always possessed more in his life to say goodbye to- still having parents and siblings and a few more beyond coworkers. It had to be limited of course but that hadn’t stopped him from feeling it. In a way Dave had the advantage, having little attachments on earth made it so much easier to leave his place of origin behind.
Oh but he wanted to be. Just as he had opened himself it all ended for him. He couldn’t be too upset about it— he was free. Conceptually anyway.
He stood to the side for the most part, letting him make his goodbyes. Most of them similarly wordless except for with his mother. Dave stood in the back of the classroom making his way through the small rows of second graders, admiring their efforts and trivial conversations. He was one of the few to look up when he started to write.
It was a beautiful poem. It must’ve meant something between them, Bowman need not pry to know. He could see the tears form in her eyes.
