FAQ

In response to Interest Check feedback we will be continuing forward as a charity zine!

All proceeds from our zine will be going to the charities we have carefully selected as causes we wish to support, with input from our interest check. 

Our Charities of Choice are:

The Trevor Project

PBS Foundation

A base Amount of all profits will also be donated to the Palestine Children's Relief Fund

Content will be Mostly SFW

Darker themes will be allowed, we will add in a content warning system for the final project.

Canon established relationships and light hints at non-canon relationships are accepted as long as it is not the main focus of the piece, we would like to keep things mostly Gen.

Canon Ford/Portal Ford must be featured somewhere in your story or fic, however he does not have to be the POV or main focus of the work.

Setting can be anything from alien worlds and society to just slightly off from canon

We believe that time is non-linear or as a certain Doctor would say it is a “wibbly wobbly timey-wimey ball of stuff” and as such some universes may be a little behind or a bit farther ahead in their own relative time frame. 

Stories and Art that are crossovers with other shows/media are welcome

AUs must either be your own work, have enough unique material from others in a similar vein, or explicit permission to use the setting must be given by the AU's original creator.

We will not tolerate any harassment or discriminatory language, engaging in hate speech or bullying will be blacklisted from the Zine.

Contributor Requirements

Contributors must be 16+

Contributors either must have or be willing to create a discord account for zine communications

Previous zine experience is not required for contributors

If you are applying as a team, please have each team member submit an application.

Team members may use samples that were created in collaboration for their application

Work submitted must be completely your own work, we do not support AI art or writing or any form of plagiarism!

Please do not submit sexually explicit NSFW writing or art, violence and gore are ok at a PG-13 Level.

Writing Sample Requirements:

2 - 5 Writing Samples

1000 - 4000 Words Per Sample

At least one sample needs to be related to Gravity Falls.

Art Sample Requirements:

Page Artists, Spread Artists

2 - 5 samples required

1 must have a fully rendered background

All other samples must have at least a rudimentary background

Spot Artists, Merch Artists

2 - 5 samples required

At least 1 must have a simple background

Comic Artist

1 Fully Rendered Page of a comic

1 - 2 samples of a scene/ panel with dialogue, can be a WIP

Minimum 2 Samples

Merch Artists

2 - 5 samples required

1 must have a simple background if you are applying to make a print.

Please include samples of merch you have either made in the past or of a type you would like to make for this zine.

Please have individual links to your best/ favourite pieces, and then you may add a link to a full portfolio.

🔆Contributor Requirements🔆

Contributor Applications will open from July 8 to August 8. Before filling out the form, please make sure to read our requirements carefully.

General portfolio requirements:

Please create a Google Drive folder which will serve as your portfolio

Please ensure that all the links work and are set to be accessed by anyone with a link. Any link that is not accessible will have their application voided.

NSFW samples are okay, but we would prefer SFW pieces.

For artists: Your portfolio piece submission must include at least 1 BNHA or 1 Naruto piece

For writers: Your portfolio should include at least 1 BNHA and 1 Naruto piece

Writer requirements:

3 of your best-written pieces

Each sample must be 1K minimum - 3K maximum words

A portion of a longer chapter may be submitted

It can either be a published or unpublished piece

We will be looking at grammar and punctuation, characterization, creativity, good flow, and plot.

Solo & Collab Artist requirements:

At least 3 pieces that best represent your art style, you may send a maximum of 5 samples.

At least 2 of these pieces should be in full color with a background (not just flat colors & sketches)

Traditional art is acceptable, as long as it is scanned with good quality

We will be looking at anatomy proportions, coloring (palette, lighting, shadows, etc.), background, and overall cohesiveness and vibe of the piece

Comic Artists:

At least 3 pieces that best represent your art style, you may send a maximum of 5 samples.

1 of which must be a comic, in full color

Traditional art is acceptable, as long as it is scanned with good quality

We will be looking at your ability to tell a story within a limited space, style, story-telling, and arrangement/flow

Merch Artists:

3 pieces that best represent your art style, you may send a maximum of 5 samples.

Merch artwork is preferred, but not required

We will be looking at the colors, concept, and vibe of the overall merch

⚔Contributor Requirements⚔

Contributor Applications will be opening from 26 Oct to 23 Nov. Please read through the information provided below before applying! 

For Everyone:

☆ Applications will be open October 26th through November 23rd at 23:59 PST.

☆ It is required to provide an email in order to submit the application. Please list an address that you check regularly, as all applicants will be contacted once decisions have been made.

☆ We will have all acceptance and rejection notices sent out no later than November 28th.

☆ To allow for easier communication, there’s a discord server for all accepted applicants. Please note that it is a requirement to be in the server to participate in this project.

☆ This is a safe-for-work project.

☆ Examples may be SFW or NSFW.

☆ The current creation period is from December 1st to March 28th with three check-ins along the way. Please be aware of any holidays that fall within this time frame and be sure you can commit your time before applying!

☆ Accepted contributors may not post their finished pieces until given explicit permission from the mods of the project. Should a contributor fail to comply with this rule, they will be removed from the zine along with their piece(s).

☆ If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask!  

For Artists:

☆ Please submit links to three pieces that you feel best represent your work. This may be done by links to your tumblr, instagram or other social media platform, a direct link to your portfolio, or by sharing a Google Drive folder with us. Should you choose the latter, please make sure to give [email protected] permission to view the files. Make sure your links are functional prior to finishing the application - if we are unable to access or view your work, it will not be considered as an example. 

☆We would prefer to have these pieces related to HunterxHunter in some way, but it is not required.

☆ Traditional is welcomed along with digital, as long as you have access to a scanner that will deliver high-quality pictures.

☆ Unpublished works are welcomed and will not be shared beyond the mods.

☆ Please note that an illustrated background will be required for the finished piece in the zine and on the cards. With that in mind, it is best to submit works that have some sort of background beyond a flat color, as we will use them to gauge ability. If you’re applying as a merch artist, this requirement will be waived.

For Fic Authors:

☆ Please submit links to three examples of your work that you have published online (AO3, tumblr, ff.net, etc) or share a folder in Google Drive with [email protected]. Make sure your links are functional prior to finishing the application - if we are unable to access or view your work, it will not be considered as an example. 

☆ Please try to submit examples that will have a total word count that falls between 2000-3000 words. 

☆ We ask that at least one of your pieces be about HunterxHunter. It’s preferred that they are written about the character(s) you list on the application so we can see your characterization and how you understand them, but it is not required.

For Cosplayers:

☆ Please submit links to three pieces that you feel best represent your work. Will this be a charity or for-profit zine? MHA Mindful will be a charity zine, meaning that the profit made from its sales will go to the charity selected during the poll. Vote for it here! Is this a PDF-only or physical zine? Because of the content and the theme of the zine, we are hoping to have it printed. For those who are interested, however, we will consider offering a PDF version in addition to the physical copy.

Who are the contributors? You can read more about them here once applications close!

What are the contributor requirements? For a detailed breakdown, see this post!

Showcasing how you write/draw the mha characters is the most important guideline - it’s not mandatory but it does help the mods to make their decision if they know how you depict the characters!

In general, the mods will be looking at lineart, anatomy and how you fill up space with backgrounds for artists. We’ll look at character voice, story structure and ability to compose full narratives for writers - having poems in your portfolio is a huge plus!

Contributor Requirements and Info

We will be accepting no more than 30 contributors. So far we will be allowing artists and writers. Cosplayers and calligraphers will also be accepted if people think it’s a good idea.

Just like mods, contributors must be active on social media and easy to contact!

All contributors must submit at least 2 samples of their work when applying. HTTYD books related work is not required but preferred. These 2 pieces must be ones that they are proud of, but must also display their style.

Contributors are not restricted to including only one character in their piece! They are allowed to include OCs so long as they do not overly affect the canon storyline and they have some sort of relationship with the chosen character (who must be kept the subject of the piece). Examples of OCs like this can be a character’s family member(s) or a friend.

Please be accepting of other people’s headcanons! Ships and romance are allowed so long as they are sfw. LGBT+ headcanons are also 100% encouraged, and you are completely free to headcanon a character as non-white! Nsfw, Pedophilia, Incest and any other unhealthy relationships are not allowed. Misogyny, Racism, Xenophobia, Homophobia and Transphobia will also not be tolerated at all. Anyone who displays behavior like this will be kicked out. We want this to be a safe space for everyone.

Contributors are expected to be responsible and work with the schedule. Extensions can be allowed but only that of about 1 month. If a contributor ignores the schedule, submits work late without contacting a mod, ignores messages and completely shuts off from the project they will be kicked out (sorry). They are expected to be civil towards others.

Artists

Zine piece must be fully drawn, preferably with a detailed background (doesn’t need to be). The dimensions are 1800 x 2500 pixels and the piece must be portrait. It also has to be in full colour and submitted as a high-quality PDF to [email protected].

Comics are permitted as long as they are short (max 2 pages). Illustrations must portray something about the character and the artist’s headcanons, so plain character portraits are not allowed. We need pieces that tell us something about their chosen character’s personality or relationships with any other characters the artist chooses to include in the piece.

By the 1st Check-in, Artists must have some idea of what they’re doing and submit a sketch. By the 2nd Check-In, they must have at least started with the colour and submit a WIP.

Merch artists can create banners/icons/wallpapers/printable bookmarks of any canon character they wish! You do not have to do a zine piece if you are making a banner/wallpaper.

A small preview of the zine piece can be posted to your social media (max 40% of the piece). The whole piece can go up after the full zine is available for download and preorders for possible physical versions are over.

Writers

The word limit for a fic is 1000-2500 words. It’s fine to go 100 or so words over/under. Writers must submit their work by email to [email protected] as either a high-quality PDF or a Google Drive link. We would prefer if written works are beta-read before submission!

Fic must portray the character’s personality in some way and does not have to imitate Cressida Cowell’s writing style! All Dragonese spoken should be recognizable as such (either by using a different font or putting it in bold, italic, etc.). The font should preferably be Arial (size 11) or similar to it in some way. Writers must be experienced and skilled in the English language.

Fics can be written in 1st, 2nd and 3rd person and preferably in the past or present tense.

By the 1st Check-in writers must have some idea of what they’re doing. By the 2nd check-in, at least 1 paragraph must be done and submitted by email to the mods.

Fics can be published after the full zine is up, but small snippets can be shared before (1-2 sentences max).

Cosplayers

Cosplay pictures must be portrait, clearly photographed, preferably edited into dimensions of 1800x2500 pixels, and submitted as a high-quality PDF to [email protected].

Cosplays must resemble the character as you imagine them, and must tell a story of some sort or portray the character’s personality in some way. More than one person is allowed in the piece!

By the 1st check-in cosplayers must have some idea of what they’re doing. By the 2nd check-in they must be at least half finished with their cosplay. Cosplayers are allowed extensions if they need them :)

Winter: the theme of winter in general, angst genre

Contributor Slots:

Twelve writers, three for each “season”

Eight artists, two for each “season”

Four collab artists, one for each “season”

Two cover artists, one for the front and one for the back

Contributor Requirements:

All application pieces must be from the Boku No Hero Academia fandom. At least one piece must be bakudeku, but the other two pieces do not have to be, although all pieces must include Bakugou Katsuki or Midoriya Izuku, or both. You do not have to create new pieces for the applications, as links to pre-existing works are perfectly acceptable!

Writers

Application Requirements:

Spring: Three example pieces of writing each between 1k-3k. Must have an overall genre of fluff but does not need to be based on the theme of spring.

If accepted you will be asked to create a minimum of 1 cleanly-lined piece

Done in the style of a colouring book (blank space filled by designs yet not overly-complex; you can look up colouring book pages in Google for inspiration!)

Portfolio Guidelines

4 example pieces, 1 of which should be lineart-only. The other three pieces can be coloured, however they must be able to demonstrate the guidelines we have outlined below.

In your application, we will be looking at how clean your lines are, how much detail you can incorporate into your piece, and how your style shows itself without colour.

Writers

Requirements if accepted

If accepted you will be asked to create a minimum of 1 poem, about 1 page in length at 12pt font.

Portfolio Guidelines

4 example pieces, 2 of which should be poetry. The other half of your application pieces can be prose/fic, however they must be able to demonstrate the guidelines we have outlined below.

During the selection process, we will be looking at language structure, flow, and representation of theme in your writing, so please submit examples which best demonstrate these aspects.
