This weekend I attended ConUHacks, a hackathon at Concordia University organised by MLH (Major League Hacking).
After 4-5 changes in project ideas (at 8pm we pretty much had nothing yet), we decided to use the Nuance API for Natural Language Understanding (NLU). Our idea was to build an app that would allow someone to sort through a lot of posts on social media and fing insults, harassment, homophobia, racism and swears so that it's easier to filter out these posts.
The app ended up working right before the submission deadline. We ended up making a web page where offensive twitter posts that are related to a hashtag you specify are shown.
After a long night of not sleeping (except for 3 15minutes naps in my case) we demoed our app and went to the closing ceremony. After a lot of waiting, we learned that we had managed to get the prize we were aiming for: An Ipad Air 2 for each member of our team.
We didn't make top 8 best apps overall, but winning best use of the Nuance API for NLU was pretty awesome. Not sleeping was totally worth it in the end!
