Converting Recipes To Foil-Wrapped
Who doesn't love cooking things over a campfire?
Since my van doesn't have an oven, I'm going to have to find different ways to cook certain things. So I analyzed a bunch of recipes that I found that can be cooked in an oven or over a campfire, & made this conversion chart based on the average cooking times
WARNING: This chart is untested. Use common sense & don't eat anything that looks like it's not cooked well enough to be safe.
Campfire Temperature To Oven Temperature
High = 450 - 500
Medium High = 375 - 450
Medium = 325 - 375
Low = Under 325
To convert oven recipes:
Meat Recipes:
If oven temperature is 350, subtract 10 minutes from cooking time
If oven temperature is 400, subtract 8 minutes from cooking time
If oven temperature is 450, subtract 5 minutes from cooking time
Vegetarian Recipes:
If oven temperature is 350, subtract 12 minutes from cooking time
If oven temperature is 400, subtract 10 minutes from cooking time
If oven temperature is 450, subtract 8 minutes from cooking time
Quick Guide
Ground Beef - 20 - 30 minutes
Steak - 30 - 40 minutes
Cubed Beef - 30 minutes
Fish w/ veg - 15 - 20 minutes
Fish w/o veg - 8 - 15 minutes
Pork - 15 - 30 minutes
Poultry - 20 - 30 minutes
Vegetables - 10 - 15 minutes
Sandwiches - 10 minutes
So, for example, let's say I have a recipe that uses steak & vegetables, & calls for 45 minutes at 400. In order to cook it in foil, I'd cook it over a medium-high heat for 35 minutes
I hope this helps someone!
