they really could’ve executed the whole lj-jam-peter thing without making lara jean seem so unlikeable. was not a fan of that and also wasn’t a fan of peter facing almost no consequences for him lying to his lj. yeah, they breakup for like 3 seconds but that’s it. also, they could expanded on john ambrose so much more. show a real bond between him and lj not solely based on their past. show us who john ambrose really is as a person. the whole movie just felt off.

I think they had the tricky job of balancing fan-favourite couple covinsky with the actual source material in which all the characters were more nuanced (i presume, reading other people’s reviews since i haven’t read the books and probably never will) and therefore harder to execute on film.

LJ indeed seemed very passive in this sequel and I think that’s why most of us were annoyed. And when she did take agency, it didn’t really further the plot. And while we do have to remind ourselves that LJ is supposed to be 16 and not a fully developed person yet, she is our lead. The way she handled things wasn’t always tasteful.

Even though Peter shouldn’t have lied about his reasoning for being in the hot tub (and that was definitely a rude awakening for me), I don’t feel like he’s in the wrong? They weren’t together yet and since then, he’s been faithful. That’s like me apologising for kissing a guy at a party years ago to a hypothetical boyfriend. But I do understand where you’re coming from.   

The break-up between LJ and Peter should’ve happened in the middle of the movie, instead of the third act, because then JA and LJ could’ve grown closer and LJ would’ve been able to properly differentiate between what it means to love someone (Peter) and be nostalgic about a rosy past (John Ambrose).  

I also wish the pay-off at the end would’ve given more of a catharsis? Like, I thought LJ was going to drive in the snow even though she hates it because she loves Peter, and although his gesture was also very thoughtful of picking her up, I wish it was the other way around. Also, I’m a sucker for a frank, “let’s fucking do this” speech.
