there was a part of august that wondered how jack managed to get himself into this position . august didn't believe the man was the smartest in the room but , instead , surrounded himself with intelligent people . maybe he just took credit that wasn't his to steal but , regardless , jack at the center of this investigation , or , multiple investigations and it must have been complex enough that he went to not one but a few people before settling on matteo .

august wasn't necessarily at this particular crime scene to lend a helping hand to jack . he was there for matteo . he was partially curious to see how matteo worked and , of course , maybe he was there as an advocate for matteo as well . he knew how jack could be . how selfish and pushy the man could be for the simple sake of answers . @devouredlamb

august was expecting a mostly quiet night . it wasn't as if he got unexpected visitors often except for maybe some of his more less than socially apt patients but for the most part , he expected it to be quiet . with the steady although soft rain , there was always a possibility for it to turn a little more chaotic outside but then there was the knock on the door . he sighed as he moved to stand , moving down the hallway before getting to the door and pulling it open . " wasn't expecting company , " he hummed but moved out of the way .

" i would like to kindly point out that i am a psychiatrist not a detective . " the truth was , august didn't particularly like jack and he half wondered if the man knew it . if maybe , perhaps , deep in his subconscious , he was aware that august's polite nature wasn't always sincere especially toward . " nor am i a babysitter . " august said that a little quieter . it hadn't taken august long to see how jack viewed matteo . to jack , matteo was nothing more than a broken toy he was desperately trying to fix and get use out of . august wondered if he called to a crime scene with jack expect august to observe matteo , to see how he functioned and while he may have shown up , he didn't plan to completely play jack's game .

It was Silas’s fault that Maverick was in the position he was in and for once he wasn’t complaining. The pill the older boy had given him on the subway ride had finally kicked in, making everything in the darkened warehouse so much better. The lights danced off the walls. The bass vibrated deep in his soul. August’s fingers as she painted his face with black light paint might as well have been fairies dancing across his fingers. “Am I pretty yet?” He laughed, trying his best to hold still as he slid his hands down her sides.

Caleb’s smile stretched across his face as the waitress filled the table all around him and August with tiny dishes filled with various bansang. It took everything in how power not to start eating right away. But the meat hadn’t been brought out yet. “I’m so excited. It’s been so long since I’ve had proper bulgogi.”

august's eyes briefly lifted up . it wasn't as if august didn't have friends . he did . even if those were few and far between . he had never been someone to keep a lot of people close . he had colleagues . people he spoke to in passing but he was sure he could count on one hand the amount of people that he actually considered a friend . " the empty seat across from me wasn't exactly an invitation to sit . "

" quite nice for everyone to be here . " it was no secret , even to august , that some people in this town had their own opinions about him . he didn't exactly fit in but that had never really been his goal at any point . he lived here . he did his job which also got a few questions every now and again but he also enjoyed hosting whether it was for family or colleagues or , sometimes , both .

" i'm waiting for someone and you're being rude . " he looked up at the one that hovered near the table he sat at inside the diner . he was used to it . plenty of people in this place were rude but august had always been willing to call it out in one way or another .
