Maverick kept his eyes focused on the screen even as Dom paused it. He didn’t want to acknowledge what was going on. He hadn’t even told Silas yet what was going on. All he wanted to do was pretend that everything was fine and blame his horrible racing on Rainbow Road. “It’s nothing.” He insisted, still hearing his phone vibrating across the room. 

Dom looked at MAverick as the boy stared at the screen. “WHat’s going on….?” He questioned, his attention snapping over to the phone that was vibrating. Dom got up and picked up the phone. “Want me to answer it?”

“Nothings going on. I’m just sick of that damn thing going off.” Maverick lied, his focus still on the television screen, despite the paused game. “No. Leave it. It’s not important.” He snapped, scared of Dom answering the phone and meeting the person on the other end.

“You say as if that’s supposed to make me less worried,” Avery observed, making no attempt to hide that he was clearly failing in that regard. He was so exhausted he barely could even get the sentence out. She took a long pause before saying something else. It took her years, but she was finally starting to learn the whole lesson of thinking before speaking. She wasn’t quite there yet, but at least she could acknowledge it and try. “I get that we’re not really friends anymore, I guess. So- I’m not asking for you to talk to me or even admit the fact that even Elliot and Riley can see that you’re not okay. But- you’re not gonna have any better luck helping Leo if you can’t even keep your eyes open. And if he’s actually a good friend, I’m sure he won’t want to see you like this anyway.” She had her own issues with Leo, but those had no relevance in that moment.

With a heavy sigh, Maverick rested his head in his hands, rubbing his tired eyes. “I don’t know what you want me to say, V. I just can’t sleep. Too much on my mind or whatever.” He shrugged, knowing the real answers as to why he wasn’t sleeping. Even falling asleep in class, he was plagued with nightmares. It was to the point where he couldn’t even relax in his own bed without having an anxiety attack. Normally, he would go to August or Silas, but since sleeping with Sky that didn’t seem like an option. So he was suffering alone and in relative silence. “He hasn’t really said anything when I go to visit him.” He pointed out, as if that made a difference.

“Thank you,” Elliot said. Even though he still felt like he could have done that himself, if it made Maverick feel better, he supposed he shouldn’t give him too much trouble. At least he didn’t seem to be pushing him in any way. “Do I look tough now?” He asked, unable to hold back a chuckle.

Maverick knew that Elliot was capable of helping himself, but then against so was the other person he had helped when he needed it. He saw blood still under the edge of the sunglasses, around the boy’s eye, but decided to leave it. The wound was clean, it wasn’t going to get infected. “You look badass.” He gave a small chuckle back, shaking his head lightly.

Dominic knew something with Mave was up, but he figured that on his own time, he would open up. Though, Dom knew he wasn’t all that good with dealing with other people’s emotions let alone his own. Though he was fine sitting in the silence, playing the game. He enjoyed this sort of. It was nice to be spending time with his foster brother and Dominic wanted them to have a better relationship. Dom watched as the boy checked his phone and threw it before starting the next race, dom looked over to see the other boy shaking, he quickly hit the pause button on the game. “Mave-Mave are you okay?” Dominic asked as he turned to face the boy. “What’s going on?”

Maverick quickly pulled the towel away when he saw Elliot flinch. “Sorry. I shoulda warned you.” He apologized, gently wiping around the wound to give him more time to brace for the sting. “True. But he didn’t need to do anything at all.” He argued, annoyance clear in his voice. He knew he had no room to feel protective over Elliot since they barely knew each other. But seeing someone purposely go after someone weaker than them stuck a nerve. “It doesn’t have to be a big deal if you don’t want it to be. I’ll clean you up and leave you alone if that’s what you want.” He promised. Despite wanting to punch the kid in the face who let that branch fly, if Elliot didn’t want him to he wouldn’t. “Can you take your glasses off so I can get the blood out of your eye?”

“It’s okay, it didn’t hurt,” Elliot quickly said, hoping Maverick didn’t feel guilty. The flinch said otherwise, but he hadn’t considered that before he spoke. Elliot wondered why it bothered Maverick so much. He understood to a degree when Isaac would get protective, they had been roommates for so long after all… but he barely knew Maverick. It was the same sort of confusion when the other sat outside his door after the pool party. “Okay… Thank you,” Elliot said with a slight smile. Although the smile faded when he heard the request. “…–I’ll clean it out, it’s fine.” He answered quickly with hope that would be enough of an answer for Maverick. The goal was to clean out the cut so it didn’t get infected. Elliot could take care of the rest.

While Maverick finished cleaning the area around the gash, he couldn’t help his mind drifting to memories from the passed. Holding ice to large bruises, cleaning cuts and trying to disinfect them the best he could with what little knowledge he had. With a clean, damp towel, he dabbed at the cut. If he tried, he probably could have dug up a first aid kit. They were on the wall by the door in almost every classroom. “I think you’re good now. It doesn’t look too bad now that it’s clean.”

Maverick tried to be gentle as he guided Elliot into the nearest bathroom, not wanting to feel like he was pushing the boy along. In the back of his mind, he could hear a nagging voice reminding him that helping this kid wouldn’t make up for when he hadn’t helped another. “I saw who it was and it was no accident that you go hit.” The kid who had pulled the branch back was a jackass he had in his gym class. A wanna be jock who desperately needed his ego stroked. He turned on the tap, getting a paper towel wet to wipe the blood off Elliot’s face.

Elliot still used his cane as he could feel Maverick guiding him. After a bit, he made the move to hold onto Maverick’s arm. It didn’t matter enough to say anything, in Elliot’s opinion, but it still made him feel safer whenever someone was guiding him. “Oh.” He flinched and instinctively pulled his head back a bit when he felt the sting of the cold water in the cut, and thought a bit more. “Well- if that is true, they could have done a lot more… you know, to hurt me and everything if they wanted to.” He was curious who it was, though- his first thought was Zander, but he was always far more direct with Elliot. The more he thought, the more he realized it probably would have just cause more problems if he did know.  “I’m not- wishing they did do something more or anything, of course,” Elliot quickly clarified. “I just don’t think it’s… that big of a deal.”

I’m sure you can clean it yourself, but that was a low blow from that asshole. It’s either help you get cleaned up or beat his ass. And I’d rather not get detention tomorrow.” He tried to make it sound like he was lighthearted and carefree as he led Elliot into the bathroom.

Elliot wasn’t sure why it mattered, but he followed along. The last thing he wanted to engage in was another argument, even if it was him trying to selflessly let someone off the hook of helping him. Since that was all it was, after all. An obligation they somehow all etched into their minds to help the poor blind kid. Since he couldn’t do anything by himself, he surely didn’t know how to do something as simple as disinfecting a wound. “Okay… Well, I’m glad I can get you out of detention then,” He said, forcing a laugh and attempting to push all of his other thoughts down. “I don’t think it’s worth beating them up though. I mean- it was probably just an accident. I don’t mind, or anything.” He wasn’t even sure who was in front of him. There was no way for him to know for sure if it was an accident or not, but wasn’t it easier to just assume it was and let it go?

He swallowed hard, digging his fingers into his wrist so the pain would keep him from crying. The anger had drained out of him, too exhausted from everything that had happened to keep up the fight anymore. Honestly, he wanted his ex to still have feelings for him. To hear that he went to him for a reason, not just because it was luck of the draw. “I…I’m not blaming you. I know I’m the one who fucked up. I’m always the one who fucks up! I just wanna mean something to you still.” The words came out without him meaning for them to. He never wanted to be the person who was hung up on their ex. But Sky really was so much more than just an ex. Or even just the person he had so many firsts with. He really thought that he had meant something similar to the older.

“You did mean something to me,” his voice cracked, the lump in his throat surfacing, causing the tears that had been threatening to spill over to fall down Sky’s cheeks as he spoke, pathetically unable to continue without crying: “you meant so much to me, you really did, but I… I’m not the same anymore,” he whispered. “I’m not… the person you met back then. I don’t think I can be him again. “

Maverick felt hot tears pouring down his cheeks, no matter how deeply he dug his fingers into his wrist trying to stop himself. Hearing the words that Sky said hurt him in ways he didn’t think were possible. Especially since he had early almost exactly what he wanted to heard. The only problem was everything was in the past tense. “I don’t want you to go back to that person.” He said quietly, brushing the tears off his cheeks only for them to be replaced by more. “You weren’t happy then..you weren’t yourself.” More words hung on hips lips, ones he didn’t feel like he could say. Arguements that seemed so pointless. He had changed since being in Chicago as well. But that didn’t matter. Nothing he could say would make any difference. No matter how much he wanted to feel the comfort that Sky used to bring him, the time for that was gone. Their last rendezvous had proven that.

Since Leo was moved to the psych ward, it wasn’t uncommon for Maverick to show up unexpectedly at his brother’s doors in the middle of the night. Well, not Sam’s. The evil twin was still mad at him for reasons he didn’t remember. Tonight the silence had gotten to him almost immediately after dinner. Since it seemed that going to Silas or August was off the table since the hickey’s from sleeping with Sky were still fresh on his neck, he headed down to Dominic’s. The two were now sitting on the couch, playing Mario Kart without really having said a word since Maverick arrived. The only sound other than the sound effects from the game was the seemingly constantly vibrations from Maverick’s phone as it kept ringing. At the race ended, he looked down at his phone. 𝚞𝚗𝚔𝚗𝚘𝚠𝚗 𝚌𝚊𝚕𝚕𝚎𝚛 was all his phone screen read. In a minor fit of panic, he threw his phone across the room where it hit the wall and landed on a hoodie that was left on the floor. His heart was racing as he inadvertently thought of the messages that would no doubt be left for him whenever he retrieved his phone. As the next level started, his hands shook, making it almost impossible for him to keep his kart on the track. @domxkyle

Maverick was sat in the back of the library, where he usually met his tutor. Having arrived early because he couldn’t stand the emptiness of his room with Leo gone, he should have started his work early, showing Rob that he was serious about bringing his grades up and wasn’t just wasting their time. But his brain couldn’t focus on the equations in front of him. Instead he was doodling in the margins of his algebra notebook, marking up the already messy pages. The study guide for the upcoming test sat beside him, untouched as it had been giving to him a few days ago, just wrinkled at the edges from being stoved into his textbook. All he needed to do was fill out the study guide properly and he would be able to use it on the test but he was so out of it, none of the questions made sense. It might as well have been his Spanish homework. “I swear, I’m trying.” He said as he saw Rob approaching, flipping to a clean page in his notebook so they wouldn’t see the doodles. @rob-ioane

Maverick was in the cafeteria when Ches approached him. He had to bite his tongue to keep himself from snapping at her as she sat down across from him. They weren’t friends. She was a gossip, spreading bullshit all over campus. A girl who hated him because of some one sided information about his relationship with Sky. Which is why he did a double take when she said something nice to him. It was a few minutes before he found any words to respond with, he felt so lost about everything that was going on with…well everything. “I don’t know what I need anymore.” He admitted with a sigh.

Ches nods, slowly, after all she could understand that. She was struggling to figure out what she needed herself lately, but she’d wanted to remind Maverick if he needed anything - for him or for Leo, she was still around. She wasn’t exactly leaving her room much unless she needed to since Thanksgiving weekend, after all. “I know it’s not always a simple answer, I don’t think I’d be able to tell someone right now either, but if you think of anything - well, you know how to call.” It was the best way to get her attention right now, her cellphone practically lived in her drawer - a missed call was harder to ignore than a missed text. “I’ve been worried about you, with everything going on with Leo.”

Maverick nodded. He did have Ches’s number saved in his phone. More then once during the week he was staying with Leo, he debated messaging her, asking for some good food or good coffee or more cigarettes. But he could never bring himself to send those messages. Deleting them and drinking more burnt coffee from the nurses station or picking at gross hospital cafeteria food with Leo and bumming cigarettes off the nurses he had made friends with. “I will.” He lied. Even if he was going to message Ches, it wouldn’t have been a phone call. Rarely did he make phone calls. And since that first call from Nathan, he had been purposely forgetting his phone in his room while he was on campus. The signs in New Zealand were in English so he was getting lost a whole lot less than he was in France. “You don’t need to worry about me. I’m fine. Just tired.” The lie was obvious. Anybody could have seen that just from looking at him.

Maverick was at once of the back tables in the library, pretending to study. He should have been actually studying, but he couldn’t focus. Under the table his leg shook so violently while his fingers ran over the edges of the book in front of him. He couldn’t place Balo’s name as she sat down across from him. A confused look crossed his face when she spoke. What was she talking about? That’s when he noticed that he his sleeves were pushed up. Quickly, he tugged them down, hiding what she had seen. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Balo knew she probably shouldn’t have said anything, but her immediate reaction was concern. “I’m sorry. I just thought…” But she doesn’t go into what she thought, trailing off before she can make the situation worse than she already had. “I shouldn’t have said anything, that was rude, wasn’t it? Sorry!” She glances down to pull a sketchbook and a pencil from her bag, “I’ll try to be quiet so I don’t distract you too much! I’m trying to finish deciding what to paint for Leo’s Christmas present and I kinda think better in here.” But she didn’t think Maverick needed much help to do that, from how restless he seemed. Still she’s not sure if she should bring it up, so she doesn’t. “What are you working on, Maverick?”

Maverick wrapped his hands in the sleeves of his hoodie, making sure they stayed down. He had a habit of keeping his sleeves pushed up, at least enough so the didn’t interfere with his guitar playing. It was hard for him to remember that now was a good time to keep them down, especially when there were other people around. The last thing he wanted right now was people to be concerned about him. “He likes anime.” He said absently, staring down at his notebook. Half filled was the page of horribly scribbled notes from class. He was trying to do what his tutor recommended, copying the notes down  legibly in a new notebook but the new notebook hadn’t even made it out of his backpack. For the last hour he had been sitting alone at this table, dissociating and picking at his arm. “World history...I think.” He murmured, looking at the text book that sat closed beside him. No, that was his writing and comprehension textbook. But why did his notes say stuff about World War One? He really was out of it.

The world swayed uneasily under him but that didn’t stop him from moving towards the door. “Not exactly.” He sighed, unsure of where he and the girl stood. Well, now it was obvious where they stood. Before they hadn’t exactly talked about their relationship. “Darling, you threw yourself at me. Don’t put your horny behavior on me.” He snapped before going after August. “Baby girl! Wait up.” He called as he exited the bedroom, rushing after her, not even bothering to put a shirt on. @augieliu

augie was shaking from the force of how hard she was crying. she thought maverick would’ve been different, that he would’ve kept his word. those some odd weeks back when he was telling her about his past, he told her he and sky were done.. why did he lie? she thought they were actually going somewhere with whatever this was. the girl felt played, played like a fiddle down in georgia. the moment she heard him calling for her to wait, she immediately stood up - clumsily might i add - to take off towards the stairs. of course he would be able to catch her with his long legs. but there she sat now hiding in the stairwell, crying muffled into her hands. “stupid, stupid girl,” she told herself harshly in her native tongue unaware of just how close he was getting to her. // @skypagex

“Obviously it’s my fault,” Sky mumbled as he threw his pants on, eager to get the fuck out before, god forbid, Maverick and Augie returned. “It’s always my fault. God forbid you take responsibility for your own dick for once.” Exhaling sharply, he got up, wandering to the door just as Mave started in the same direction. “Yeah, you go run after the girl you neglected to tell me anything about before we fucked. I’m gonna go get a full STD panel.” @maverickbowie

Maverick heard what Sky said and felt his blood boiling. Yes, he knew he didn’t try his hardest to keep Sky off of him, but Sky wasn’t exactly innocent either. “You’re the one who threw yourself at me and wouldn’t take no for an answer. I knew what I was fucking doing. And we used a condom, jackass.” He pushed passed Sky, running after August, easily catching up with her. The bright lights of the hall hurt his head, but he ignored it. He had to talk to her, to at least explain what was going on. Leave it to Sky to be in the only practice room with a full drum kit. Sure, it was the first practice room. The easiest one to get to when entering the music hall. But it was the only one with a full drum kit for crying out loud! Why not leave it open for a drummer to use? As of late, he would have let it be. But today, he was in a bad mood. As if that was any excuse for him snapping on Sky, going off about why the older was so attached to him. When the other said those stupid words, they might as well have been a knife in his gut. “So I really don’t mean anything to you anymore? I was just a warm body that you were comfortable enough to fuck again?”

It was no secret that Maverick liked his smoke. Multiple times since starting his time at Luxor, he had wandered to some semi hidden area to blaze until he was in a daze. This night, he wasn’t sure exactly where he was. Most places around the New Zealand campus were still a mystery to him. Blame it on Leo and Maverick spending more time with him at the hospital than on campus or even in classes. When his former roommate found him, he was so stoned, he wasn’t sure he was in his own body anymore. “Leave me the fuck alone.” He tried to argue, his own words sounding funny as he tried to shove the smaller boy away.

“Christ, and people ask me why I don’t be nice more.” Jack grumbled, although the shove barely did anything, and instead he just crossed his arms, giving Mave a flat look. “You know I don’t listen to you, riiiight? Reckon we should’ve established that within like, the first day of living together. Anyways,” he continued chirpily, “you’re fucking wankered and I am sweetly offering to help out so you could at least thank me for being an angel. Or y’know. Not push me.”

Maverick rolled his eyes, or at least he thought he did. He was so stoned, his eyes were barely open as it was so it was more like be blinked rather than rolled his eyes. “I’m not gonna thank a demon for pretending to be nice. You could be doing this for some twisted reason like...I dunno. To sleep with me or get more fucking blackmail on me.” At this point, he wasn’t even sure what he was rambling on about. He would have been fine with being left alone to be found by whatever wild animal stumbled across him. New Zealand had deadly animals, right?
