Hidden Titles | AU | McVance

Emmeline Vance worked in one of the local taverns in town. Only because her father owned it, people weren’t too fond of hiring women, though Emmeline was very good at her work, she had a suspicion that if she did want to work in another tavern, or some other place, she could. But she didn’t want to, her fathers place was more than enough and she pretty much had free reign, the regulars were almost like family and she enjoyed herself for the most part. Her father trying to convince her to marry at this point was just annoying, and she had vowed to herself not to. Marriage wasn’t something that she was keen on in the slightest, a man telling her what to do and where to go for the rest of her life? Not a chance.

They also got the occasional traveller, going to see the King or some of the like. Emmeline didn’t know much about the Royal family, other than the fact that they lived just outside of town in that big castle, and paraded sometimes, but Em was always working so she could never attend them. They didn’t seem to do much in her eyes other than parade and make rules for other people to follow. 

It was early in the evening and people were coming in for dinner, but mostly a mug of ale, so Em was working hard. She slung a few of the mugs onto a tray and hiked up her skirt so she could easily step over Alvin, a drunk that was passed out on the floor, but not before giving him a quick kick in the guts to make sure he was still alive. “Alright, Two ales, one wine” she called out as she placed the now full drinks on the counter that were taken “Roast” she said, dropping a plate in front of another patron and taking her tea towel out of her apron to wipe her forehead before she properly looked up and noticed someone she hadn’t ever seen before standing at the bar. Everyone else was too preoccupied to notice the girl that Em thought stood out like a sore thumb, but maybe that was just because she thought she was so beautiful. “And for you?” she asked the girl, wiping her hands on her apron.

Catch Ups | 1981 | Ben + Mar

Ben bounded up the steps to his sisters apartment, he hadn’t seen her in far too long (it had only been about a week, but by McKinnon standards, since ben had finished school, that was a very long time) so he’d owled her asking if he could come over. He had worried that maybe she’d be too busy or not want to see him, after what had happened to her. Whenever he thought about it, it made Ben’s blood boil, which was a vast difference from his usually smooth disposition. 

He didn’t come empty handed, their mother had baked the night before, so he’d brought Mar a box of cookies, and two bottles of butterbeer. He knocked on the door with his free hand and grinned as it opened “Your favourite little brother is here, you can finally stop your anxious wait”

Same Same, But Different | 1969 | Violet + Marlene

Violet had been to brunch at the McKinnons a few times. Their families were fairly close, so it wasn’t unusual that they would come to brunch every now and then. Although, this was only her second McKinnon brunch as Nick’s girlfriend. Which meant that her family wasn’t there as a safety net. It was the summer holidays, and she had stayed over the night before. 

Brunch itself had gone well, but now Nick had excused himself to go play Quidditch with his brothers. She smiled when he pressed a kiss to her cheek before he left then looked around the table at the people left, feeling slightly awkward. She turned to Marlene, she got along with Marlene as far as she knew, she was the same age as Tib “How are you going with your tutoring Mar?” she asked with a smile.

And In This Corner | 1980 | McVance

Em hadn’t been back to the Auror Academy properly since she graduated. She’d dropped off a few files here and there for whatever Auror was in charge of training when a case concerned them, but that was just to the offices. So walking back into the training room felt like she was riding a wave of nostalgia. Not much had changed, admittedly it wasn’t like it had been a decade, only a few years, but still. She looked around and remembered some of the bigger duels she had done and annoyingly the times she’d had her ass kicked. Especially in the boxing ring, she had been smaller than most of the other trainees, so the hand to hand combat had been the hardest for her.

Looking over at the ring she spotted the person she’d come to see. Mar was sparring with some trainee, and it looked like the poor sod was getting wrecked. Em made her way over and rested her elbows on the side of the ring with a cheeky grin as she began to speak “We’re here tonight with a match everyone’s been waiting for folks, the trainee, and the one and only Marlene McKinnon. Doesn’t look like a fair fight off the bat ladies and gents, McKinnons got a lot of pent up aggression, in my opinion it’s those 4 brothers she grew up with. But it looks like Trainee is putting up a good fight” She grinned, holding her hand to her mouth to make her voice slightly echo-y.

“In moves Trainee with a left hook, and Oo just misses, but lucky for him he doesn’t forget to block the incoming punch from McKinnon” she tried to not laugh, and make it as serious as possible, but it was hard not to “McKinnons moving around the ring now, taking him for a ride, tiring him out. I wouldn’t fall for it kid, I’ve heard she’s got the stamina of a racehorse” she grinned at the last part, knowing Marlene would both scold her and laugh at it later.

Delinquents | 1977 | McVance

Emmeline knew why she was in detention, that didn’t mean she liked it, or thought it was fair. In her defence, Thomas Rickmore had been egging her on and started the whole confrontation by telling everyone in their Potions class that Em couldn’t stop a bludger if she stood right in front of it with nets for hands. Which was just stupid. Sure, Em could have waited until they were actually out of the classroom, or alone to set him straight, but then he had given her that stupid smug look and she couldn’t be blamed for the boils that suddenly appeared on his face. They were a form of self defence. Kind of.

It didn’t matter anyway, because she had timed it badly and Slughorn had seen it all. So now she was sitting in her second day of detention, bored out of her brains, and hoping that the next hour or two would go quickly. She had brought some work to do with her, but it wasn’t really helping her entertainment. She thought she might be alone for the night which would be a nightmare, but then she heard the door click open and she smiled “Wotcher McKinnon”

Lost | 1973 | Ben + Mar

Ben McKinnon could not have been more excited to finally be at Hogwarts, going to join his siblings to see and experience all of the things that they had told him about. His first month had gone by quickly, and he had enjoyed every minute. That is until he got lost.

So far he had been pretty good at finding his way around, but tonight, he had taken a wrong turn somewhere, but the problem was he couldn’t figure out where the wrong turn had been. The Eleven year old was now panicking because he didn’t want to be lost when it became past curfew, would his parents be disappointed if he got a detention? Even if it was by accident like getting lost?

He turned yet another corner, and bumped into a group of some older Gryffindors. “Sorry” he said, his voice a little higher in pitch that was normal, he was just so rattled about not knowing where he was.

Finally | 1999 | Ben + Mar AU

It had been over for months now, yet Ben couldn’t quite believe it. There was no longer a fear of Voldemort, he was finished and definitely not coming back this time. Ben had been spending most of his time at work since the final battle. So many people had been wounded, and that wasn’t even the start. Most of the injuries weren’t things that could be fixed with one appointment, and almost everyone was suffering some form of PTSD. So that was why Ben had decided to take classes in psychology, because he wanted to help in more ways than physical, if not physically wounded, people were mentally strained and thats how he wanted to help.

Today he was meeting Mar at her place for coffee and a catch up, which felt odd in itself because finally there was no danger, there was no sense of fear weighing on everyones mind. Sometimes it was the calmness that got to him, it felt like a body of water that was oddly still, and one little ripple would seem like a huge wave. But he tried his best to keep his own issues under wraps. He knocked on Marlenes door and waited for it to open, and when it did he grinned widely “Hey look it’s my favourite sister”

AU | New Additions | 1981

Ben had been working all through the night on his trainee placement shift, when in the middle of working, he had been told his sister had been admitted. In Labour. He was about to become an uncle again. It had been hard to concentrate for the rest of his shift, wanting to stop by to see how she was doing, but every single time he was about to dart off to see Marlene he got called back to watch a new procedure. 

Finally, in the late morning Ben’s shift had ended and he could finally go to meet his niece or nephew. He threw on a jacket to cover his uniform and made his way to Marlenes room. He rapped on the door quietly, hoping not to wake anyone, then opened the door careful not to make a sound “Mar?” he poked his head in with a smile.
