April 9
For this prac, our main activity for the 2 hours was to construct typefaces with different shapes. For our first typeface we were only allowed to work with one shape, our group’s first shape was squares, which we struggled to work with when making curved letters such as s, e and n. We worked well together in coming up with different styles for the harder letters and then voting on the best one, and our end result ended with a quite minimalist alphabet with a pixel like style.
For our next alphabet we were given an extra shape to work with which was a quarter circle. This shape helped majorly when reconfiguring the curved letters, creating a more readable alphabet with a simplistic style that everyone in our group liked.
After walking around to look at other groups work, we saw that one group worked really well together using a different method of allocating a letter or two for each person to work on which looked really successful.
Our last task for the class was to pair up with another group, combining all of our shapes to make a brand new alphabet. Initially we found that working with double the people was quite tricky, so we decided to split into groups and work on a few letters at a time. Beforehand agreeing on a style for everyone to work on; in capitals, and using each of the coloured shapes in each letter. Our final result was a typeface that we were all proud of, with an energetic and distinctive style!!!
