If it’s that list of queer SFF books going around, then at least one the author cites isn’t actually queer. Like, the third book in the trilogy? Yes. The first (AKA the one listed)? Nope.

It’s this one; and yeah, there’s a borderline case or two.  The Warrior’s Path might be the one you’re referring to if we were thinking of the same list; it’s definitely got queer characters, but IIRC their relationship doesn’t develop much in the first book.

Also, mmm, I would have emphasized the warning on Warchild a lot more.  It’s extremely compelling writing, and I’m glad I read it, but it needs some very emphatic TWs.

I should sit down and compile my personal list of queer sff recs at some point this year... there’s been some good stuff out relatively recently.

I actually got a copy from NetGalley way back and read it before it came out and then just... failed to write a review.  But I really like it!  It felt... thematically adjacent to Finnikin of the Rock, by way of showing Maas how to write an assassin competition.

Megan snagged me an ARC of Ruin of Stars back in like... May?  April?  and then we moved and my time management was garbage and etc etc. So between that and my failure to review the first one in a timely manner, I’ve got some catching up to do.

I miiiiight also have a shiny galley of Song of the Dead on my shelf too, with which I am in much the same boat.

This should be a very entertaining review.

It’s going to have a lot of quotes followed by angry screaming.  For instance:  I just transcribed a single sentence to see how long it was.  The result?  101 words.  Even if I didn’t object to the worldbuilding, the hipster stylistic flourishes, or the way in which eVERY SINGLE FEMALE CHARACTER EXISTS TO HAVE HER LIFE RUINED BY A MAN AND FOR NO OTHER REASON, I’d be raking this over the coals for syntax alone.

By the way, I’m now at 58% and starting page 6 of notes.

You should read Deep Wizardry by Diane Duane. There's wizards who turn into whales and whales who are wizards.

okay you wanna know something weird?

I have no idea if I’ve already read it.

and this is not in a ‘it may have been forgettable and the series sounds vaguely familiar’.  no.  I’ve read the first Young Wizards book for sure, and I think I’ve read the second (I remember an MC’s younger sister coming into her Wizardry?) and honestly if I’ve read two I probably read the one with whales on it because come on, but I have NO RECOLLECTION AT ALL.  and whenever this was it predated mid 2004, which is when I started keeping extensive records of everything I read, because it’s not on my Goodreads (where I transferred all of my ratings, to be thorough) or on my Word doc masterlist.

Also, I looked up the series to verify this and Deep Wizardry is the second and I’m almost certain I’ve read High Wizardry so I must have???  but I don’t remember anything about doing so at all.

TL;DR:  I’ll read the whole series back to back someday, but since it’s not in my extensive collection of things I own but haven’t read (and this is not a suggestion that anyone - Joe, I’m looking at you - should buy them for me; I have too many unread books already) it’ll be a while.
