Derek Jeter - The Cooperstown Collection: Memorabilia from the Yankees ...
JOHN BAZEMORE/AP A jersey from Derek Jeter’s first World Series triump in 1996 is on display at Cooperstown.
With Derek Jeter’s playing days officially over, the wait has begun for his eligibility for the Baseball Hall of Fame. But in a way Jeter is already in Cooperstown, where a number of artifacts tell the story of his celebrated career. Here is a list of what Jeter memorabilia is in the Hall’s collection as of Sept. 1, 2014 – a list compiled by Brad Horn, the Hall’s vice president for communications and education.
Yankees jersey from 1996 World Series
The rookie from Kalamazoo was at shortstop as the Yankees won the 1996 World Series. A few weeks later he won American League Rookie of the Year honors, as Bill Madden reported.
Bat, AL Division Series, Sept. 30, 1997
Cleveland would eventually top the Bombers in five games for the 1997 ALDS, but the Yankees took Game 1 of the series with the help of three consecutive home runs in the sixth inning by Tim Raines, Derek Jeter and Paul O’Neill. Peter Botte was there.

In the Yankees’ historic 114-win season, Jeter hit .324 with 127 runs, 19 homers and 84 RBI. His hitting was off in the post-season until the World Series, where he batted .353 in the Yankees’ four-game elimination of the Padres. “Cinderella’s slipper now is on the other foot,” Peter Botte wrote.
JOHN BAZEMORE/AP Derek Jeter is the MVP of the 2000 All-Star Game at Turner Field in Atlanta.

Starting at shortstop, the 26-year-old Jeter collected three hits and drove in two runs to earn the Most Valuable Player trophy in the AL’s 6-3 victory over the National League at Turner Field in Atlanta. It tops the list of Jeter’s favorite All-Star Game memories compiled here by Mark Feinsand.
AMY SANCETTA/AP Derek Jeter’s batting helmet from the 2000 Subway World Series win over the Mets is in the Hall.

Jeter was the MVP of the Subway Series, the third title in a row for the Yankees. They put the Mets away in Game 5 at Shea Stadium, where Jeter’s game-tying solo homer in the top of the sixth was a decisive moment, as Thomas Hill reported for the News here.
USA jersey from 2006 World Baseball Classic
Jeter represented his country at the inaugural World Baseball Classic, but the tournament ended early for Team USA, eliminated by the Mexicans before the final round. “Red, White and Boo” was the headline on Anthony McCarron’s report from Anaheim.
Spikes from September 16, 2008
The Hall has the spikes Jeter wore the night he recorded the hit that broke Lou Gehrig’s record for career hits at the old Yankee Stadium, number 1,271. Mark Feinsand correctly called it an “unbreakable record” in this report.

One of the bats in the Hall’s Jeter collection is the one he used in his last games at the old Yankee Stadium, culminating with the emotional goodbyes on Sept. 21, 2008, where Jeter gave memorable remarks to the assembled fans.

These were on Jeter’s hands the night he recorded career hit number 2,722, surpassing Lou Gehrig’s seven-decade-old record. Mike Lupica captured the moment for the News.

“I forgot how good this felt,” Jeter said on Nov. 4, 2009, as the Yankees won their 27th world championship. The Yankees’ 7-3 win over Philadelphia gave them their 27th world championship, but first in the new Stadium. “The move across 161st Street is now complete,” wrote Mark Feinsand.

Jeter finally got his 3,000th hit on July 9, 2011, more than Mantle, DiMaggio, Ruth or Gehrig, as the News report that day explained.

The Captain went 2-2 in his 14th and final All-Star Game, earning a standing ovation from the fans at Minnesota’s Target Field. Mark Feinsand was there.
