Forgot to mention at the time that I did almost give stay positive the title “the life you imagine” as a joke for the audience of absolutely no one, because that’s the title of Derek Jeter’s trash motivational autobiography, which my friend and I once bought at a used bookstore to hate-read to each other in the car. 

(Does this mean it would have been a joke for an audience of one person, my friend who definitely still remembers the part where Derek Jeter brags about having all his own teeth and all his own hair? No, this friend is so appalled with me for getting into Heated Rivalry that I’m lucky she’s still talking to me.)

Anyway, this is VERY UNFORTUNATE, no one is less happy about it than me, but Derek Jeter is another great Shane Hollander comp. Biracial in a way that white people find non-threatening and mostly ignore. Captain of a legacy team. Married to the game except when he dates a mega-celeb. Persistent gay rumors the longer he remains a high-profile bachelor. Actually, the only area of true divergence is that all of Shane’s heterosexual hook-ups were unplanned dissociative episodes, so Ilya would have been the one who gave out gift baskets. 

Oh my god, consider the Jeter and A-Rod implications of this. And like, sidebar, A-Rod signing with the Rangers is actually a pretty good real-life version of Ilya to Ottawa. But like imagine if A-Rod got traded to the Yankees because Jeter and A-Rod got married. I know that I have created a universe here where the direct parallel requires that Ilya get traded to Montreal, but don’t let facts get in the way of your dreams.
