For the draw your oc Challenge! Coquina for 12 and Rani for 11 if you like!
12. riding an anglerfish
they're acting much cooler here than they really are hehe
11. dressed up as a canon character
sorry goss, rani is uh. verrrry tall. there's no chance that was ever gonna fit
asks from here, thanks for sending these in eepy!
i decided to draw my characters who were attacked most in artfight this year- congrats to coquina for getting 8- double what anyone else got, hahaha. im happy to see how much love they got since they're newer
the others are runners up at 4 attacks each :)
artfight attacks ive done so far! these lovely characters belong to @naryu-n, @desisthegame, @straweepy and @assassiowl
coquina is also here :p
handful of doodles ive been sitting on. coquina likes fishing, whether it is done with a pole or. just their entire hand and arm. somehow losing a finger to a fish has not deterred them from shoving their arm in underwater holes that they cannot see- though the circumstance of that injury were in fact different lol
sometimes celestine (@straweepy) helps give them herb recommendations for cooking their catches :)
schist finds themself most comfortable working with hornfels, especially after sitting through slate and gossan's bickering. they have a hard time telling how much of it is friendly sarcasm and how much of it is actual bitterness- especially after the incident that lost gossan an eye.
also, they're really not a fan of sap wine. they can digest it! they just think its gross. no offense to porphy. ...this doesn't stop them from trying it again every couple of loops, though. maybe it'll grow on them?
trapping myself in amber for the month. come find me on artfight!!!
Hiya! Was hoping to learn more about your fish! 12 + 18 for Coquina and 8, 10 and 20 for Basalt? I loved reading about Basalt’s dynamic with the founders and their embroidery! Excited to know more about them! :}
HIII IM SO SORRY i mean tto answer this AGES AGO and work just swallowed me whole
okay okay fishes!! aaaah theses r really good ones sjdsf
12. What is Coquina’s favorite food or dish?
Mkay so Coquina would probably tell you it depends on your definition of food. In terms of bug snacks, they favour grasshoppers the most - just the right amount of crunch and they’re really cool bugs! Now, for a favourite dish, Coquina would probably say salty grilled fish with herbs! They’re a big fan of the crispy texture the scales gain, and the mix of it with the softer meat. Their most favourite is the way rutile makes it, with a little sap syrup cooked in with gives it just a tinge of sweetness. Plus Coquina likes watching Spinel fish, and they know fishes get the same snacks as them, so they’ve got respect for em.
18. How does Coquina approach problem solving? Do they try to think through the problem, attempt to brute force the issue, or stumble across solutions accidentally?
Ooooh that’s a rlly good one!! Coquina definitely goes more the brute force way with most issues, which often hast them accidentally stumbling across solutions. They actually could think through their problems pretty easily, but they entirely lack the impulse control for it lol. They rather try things and see how it comes out than try to predict chains of reaction to find a solution. When they can’t manage to solve a problem, they trust Tor wholeheartedly to be able to think up a solution, given Tor’s way better at it than them anyway lol.
8. Does Basalt wear something other than the canon outfit/space suit?
Yes!!! I’ve actually gotta update Basalt’s design lmao, but out of their space suit they favor wide and baggy pants and sleeveless tops! They enjoy mending and customizing their clothes, mostly with embroidery but also with patches of various shapes and patterns. They prefer to prioritize comfort and ease of movement for day to day life, and usually keep all their tools and things in a big crossbody bag that is terrible to sort through (and terrible for their back too… rip).
10. Does Basalt have any piercings or tattoos? If so, what and where?
They do!! Basalt has two earrings in their right ear and one in their left, little orange hoops, which mostly matches gabbro’s earrings! Gabbro DOES have two more in their left ear, but basalt’s left ear got ripped up quite a bit in a childhood accident and they can’t pierce the remaining scar tissue really well.
They’ve also got a tattoo on the inner side of their right arm, the nomai word for ‘fish’, of which Hal has a matching one! Basalt very much enjoys having permanent reminders of the people they hold close, especially post loop.
20. What is Basalt’s favorite planet?
I think Basalt’s is probably Brittle Hollow, simply for how many discoveries there are to make there!! One of their favourite places to watch the supernova is in the Southern observatory, in which they’ll also drag gabbro every once in a while. (One day, they’ll manage to convince riebeck. One day) They also looove fooling around with the gravitational pull of the black hole, they would spend loops back to back just jumping over it and flinging themselves across the inner crust or the planet (to various amounts of bodily harm).
They also have a special place in their heart for the attlerock, given it’s Esker’s moon! It was their first stop, and one of their most frequent through the loops and after.
thank you so much for asking abt my fishes!!
1, 6, and 10 for coquina!! 👀
What was the original thought that led to the creation of this character?
I really wanted to make an oc after beating the game! I wasn't yet sure if I wanted to make a hatchy oc (actually, i was sure that I Wouldn't- but that's since changed lmao), but I really like the general vibe in timber hearth so I wanted to make someone to plunk down there.
As for their interests, I personally am also a big fan of nature and animals and such :) so Coquina gets that
ALSO.
Sure anglerfish are pests, but this line has always made me a little sad- I wanted to to make someone who Would miss the anglerfish, who would treasure and take care of it in the museum :) Someone's gotta!!!
6. What was the thought process behind their appearance? Did you go mostly for the aesthetic or are there other reasons they look the way they do?
I really wanted their design to be bright and fresh and energetic! So they get nice light and warm colors, like orange and yellow and white, and bright blue skin with fun triangular marks.
I also wanted their outfit to give off a kind of carefree/relaxed/Cool vibe. So they get kind of loose beachy clothes- the sunglasses and flipflops especially. The sunglasses were something I settled on asap- they're polarized to help them see fish better! (they also just look neat and make it easy to tell who they are at a glance- distinctive!) The flipflops were something I picked more for the vibe at first, but I later decided to project my dislike of wet socks onto them- They hate wearing any kind of footwear that gets and Stays soggy. It's flipflops or nothing for them. This also became an in-universe reason why they tend to wear lighter and shorter clothes- They're around streams quite often and like to hop in them from time to time.
So, I guess I went for aesthetics first (with a general idea of what they do and how that would also play into their appearance), and then ended up working backwards a little to justify everything as I developed them more! lol
10. What is their main character arc in the story? Where do they start and how do they develop? Do they get a happy ending or is their story a tragic one?
I took a while to answer this because I was drawing all these little bits out :) This is my art blog I'm gonna stick art where I can in these questions lol. ANYWAY
Coquina was a very reckless and rowdy hatchling- constantly running around and getting into mischief. They really idolized Feldspar and the other travelers, and loved to hear them tell stories. They wanted to travel the stars too someday!
In an effort to keep them from getting into too much trouble, they were sent over to Spinel to help fish. It was mostly busy work, but they grew rather attached to Spinel's storytelling as well- even if Coquina was still quite a pest and tended to interrupt them and get on their nerves!
When they weren't busy helping out, Coquina was dead-set on training to become an astronaut! It was hard work and a lot of learning, but they were determined.
Unfortunately, an experience in which they fell into the 0g cave with no suit or jetpack shocked them back to reality a bit- They hated it. It was terrifying and nauseating and they never wanted do it again. Even with a suit. They pretty much abandoned their dreams of space travel here- It was too much work anyway. That's what they'd tell anyone who asked.
Despite them abandoning the possibility of exploring planets themself, Coquina was still fascinated by any creatures out there! They particularly treasure the anglerfish in the museum and have given it a name. They feed it often with smaller fish.
....And they may have gotten a little too close during one of these feedings- The anglerfish bit off one of their fingers. That was a fun conversation to have with Hornfels (who had definitely warned them Not to be so careless).
For a while they weren't sure how to feel about the injury- it was really hard to adjust to. When you only have three fingers on a hand, losing one makes a huge difference in how easily you can grip things.
But it was their fault. They'd been warned against it and they didn't listen. And it was just a finger- why was everyone so worried? But it was harder to hold things now, and they couldn't go swimming as often while it was still bandaged up.
They would isolate themself a bit, overthinking everything. They don't really enjoy being fussed over or feeling weak.
Luckily they had friends to help drag them out of their cabin every once in a while! Celestine (belongs to @straweepy hi) would take Coquina away to help with firewatch stuff and play games and chat- anything to keep them engaged and out of their head. It was nice. They really appreciate it a lot.
And while they're never going to get that finger back, it did heal up enough for them to eventually get back to their usual routine. They forgave the anglerfish of course- it was just doing its thing.
They've made peace with the fact that they're not going to travel the stars. Space is fascinating and beautiful, but also unpredictable, dangerous, and terrifying. Coquina quite prefers their routine at home on Timber Hearth. They know what to expect and they've mellowed out a lot in their day to day life. (They never completely lost their reckless streak, but you won't find them doing anything too dangerous now. They still love getting into trouble with the newer hatchlings.)
So, in short- their arc is about growing up, chilling out, and realizing that it's okay if your path in life changes and you don't achieve your past dreams. You can have new dreams. Or just be content with where you are. Feels nice to get there.
...Of course, in the end, they're still going to get incinerated in the supernova with the rest of the solar system, but until then they're going to be blissfully oblivious! ::p
Asks from here! Y'all should send more :)
And super duper thanks Kat for giving me the opportunity to yap!!!! Also to Eepy- our chatter has helped me develop Coquina soooo much 💖
