robert harris says that tiro invented the ampersand but he’s wrong. the ampersand already existed in roman legal shorthand. tiro came up w an entirely different shorthand system that instead of having ligatures for whole words had simple and Combinable symbols for common short words/prepositions but the cool thing is that the symbols stood for those things in meaning Or Sound. one was the tironian et which looks like this: ⁊. tironian notes ended up being used by monks and ⁊ ended up still meaning and, but also representing the sound of the word for and. so you could write like understand and underst⁊. it’s still in use on some street signs in like scotland. and it’s way cooler than the ampersand so yea
