robert harris says that tiro invented the ampersand but he’s wrong. the ampersand already existed in roman legal shorthand. tiro came up w an entirely different shorthand system that instead of having ligatures for whole words had simple and Combinable symbols for common short words/prepositions but the cool thing is that the symbols stood for those things in meaning Or Sound. one was the tironian et which looks like this: ⁊. tironian notes ended up being used by monks and ⁊ ended up still meaning and, but also representing the sound of the word for and. so you could write like understand and underst⁊. it’s still in use on some street signs in like scotland. and it’s way cooler than the ampersand so yea

hi hello i love your blog and your real gracchi brothers hours among many other things. i've never been able to muster the attention span to get into the mountain goats, but seeing your nerd classics interactions w the lead singer on twitter gives me life. do you have any recommendations on where to start listening to their discography? literally the only songs of theirs i listen to are up the wolves/cubs in five, just for a point of ref.

Oh man, this is so hard because I really like everything they’ve ever done. What I did is just listen to each album until I fully absorbed it… in whatever mood or order struck me… And i encourage you to go to spotify and pick a completely random album and listen to it all day and really get INTO the lyrics (the annotated mountain goats website helps for that also)BUT here’s a few Specific suggestions based on what grabbed me and pulled me in here. 1. Finish listening to The Sunset Tree! An excellent album especially since you already like Up The Wolves 2. Listen to the album Tallahassee while reading the Oresteia [i firmly believe BOTH pieces of media MUST be experienced this way to be fully appreciated. also, get the prequel plays in there too]3. Speaking of the House of Atreus (the house that dripped blood) there’s a song on Zopilote Machine called Alpha In Tauris that is in fact a Reference to Iphigenia in Tauris CONFIRMED so, 3a. And while we’re on the topic of this family, Standard Bitter Love Song #7 on the same album is ALWAYS tied to The Flies for me, so, that also4. Actually Zopilote Machine in general is a really good, cohesive album5. FULL FORCE GALESBURG as an Album is spectacular! with Weekend in Western Illinois being my Favorite song from it! LOVE bitter triumph6. My favorite EPs are Beautiful Rat Sunset (PLEASE listen to song for cleomenes i love him cicero) and Babylon Springs!7. Fault Lines and Riches and Wonders… all hail west texas is a good album but those two songs are spectacular Alright… 8. THERE’S A SONG ABOUT SOPHOCLES’ AJAX and it’s called against agamemnon and it’s on bitter melon farm and listen to that whole album as well. thanks. 9. BEAT THE CHAMP is GREAT and CHOKED OUT is AN ARISTEIA FOR OUR TIMESORRY THIS IS sporadic and not at all in any functional order but here’s just some things i like about the mountain goats and I hope you like these songs too..(PS the real answer to this question is my Oresteia regular / good ending playlists but that’s. a whole other can of Worms)

Quigs isn’t much of an eater and was content enough with Vienne’s blunt and flavourless meat pies, stews, and casseroles. Nowadays he eats whatever Matty comes up with, when he remembers to eat at all. He is a joyless sadsack.

Matty, on the other hand, LOVES food and wants to learn to cook as scrummily as Iori. Her stewed greens were probably the best thing he’s ever eaten. They tasted like creamed spinach with tons of garlic, chili, rush nuts, and mudbug chunks. He’s going to find more food to love at our gang’s next stop. We shall attend a Treenahinn feast. I want Matty to be a happy chubmuffin.

Jivi misses his nana’s shipboard fare and will fight you if you don’t agree that tortoise is the most delicious meat in the world. A tortoise steak with a few shakes of vinegar and oil and a slice of fresh, toasted bread to soak up the juice is heaven.

god I hope that kid’s alright. honestly imo the child characters are one of Unsounded’s greatest strengths? they’re good kids, it seems like Chea loves her dad a lot ( ... understandable since her mom seems ... UnGreat ), and I want them to be together and okay

I hope her definitely having overheard the conspiracy conversation doesn’t come around to hurt her

how did the aldish couple of "enlightened patrons" get themselves to central cresce in this political climate, or are they expats? are they both jets? also KUDOS for today's page, probably one of my favorite in a long while. it started my morning with a hearty, long absent, sorely needed laugh.

Well, just their appearance implies their story, no? He’s a Jet and she’s a Bronze, so their relationship is verboten. This likely fostered resentment towards the government and interest in alternate ideas. They could be expats living in Sharteshane but they are definitely wealthy and resourceful, and still possess a deep fear and dislike for Cresce. I was thinking they were both still in Alderode though and he’s governor of a medium sized town with financial and political connections that give him free travel access.
