commie rant about 'kids these days' even though im only 22

i've been having a lot of thoughts about the media literacy and education of future generations because a bunch of my coworkers are teenagers -> like, high school -> which is fine, they're sweet kids, but it's just kinda disturbing hearing them talk about school, or reading, or even just, like, basic social critical thinking skills.

none of them read, none of them want to read, none of them see the point to reading. the kids i work with completely lack critical thinking skills about the media, about their politicians, about genuinely most things. like, i was reading a book for fun was and that was genuinely baffling to them (this is not the first time i've had this convo with a 17 year old either which is. scary!)

they use AI to do their homework, a lot of the kids i work with are going into trade school so they don't even see the point to doing their schoolwork. which, like, if you don't wanna go to uni and you wanna go to trade school, i think that's honestly a great decision considering how the usamerican university system is a massive cash-grab. but you should still want to learn just for the sake of learning! they genuinely lack curiosity. they're on their phones constantly. and to be fair, my sample size is specifically coming from the semi-suburbs of a blue city -> but tbh that makes me more worried. because obviously the democratic party has always been functionally useless, but the fact that so-called 'progressive' states are having such an issue with the willful ignorance of their youth just doesn't bode well to me.

not saying this is all teenagers or anything, it's definitely not; and probably more of a usamerican/imperialist country phenomenon than anything (in my opinion, but i'm definitely not an authority on the topic) but imperialist countries have a vested interest in keeping citizens ignorant so they don't realize their own complicity –> or how their government will be (or actively is) turning those same weapons against them (not that it should take that for them to give a shit but. the usa is self-serving if nothing else) (plus everyone here is fucking dumb and wants to stay that way so. it's pretty easy.)

but i do worry about the damage of instant gratification on the coming generations (and the way school funding is being gutted) because talking to these kids, i don't think they'd be able to properly critique their government even as their own rights are being stripped away. i don't think they'd be able to read between the lines about the information being presented to them. i don't think they'd question anything they were being told if it came from a voice that meant they didn't have to think about it further or give it any attention.

idk. just some thoughts. (could be because i've been a communist from a youngish age and am assuming teenagers are more politically educated than they are, but they SHOULD be politically educated! they should be able to think for themselves! they should have at least a tiny desire to learn! to expand their minds and understand the world around them! what is happening???)

i mean, they're ALL definitely falling for borderline-fascist propaganda (or nationalist propaganda but those are the same thing in the usa) -> like even if they don't have overtly 'conservative' opinions (although for the usa the options are pretty much just nazi or incompetent nazi.), they are absolutely trending towards a selfish, socially isolated opinion that i find very concerning. it's very "me, me, me" "MY instant gratification, ME being inconvenienced, MY boredom"

idk. i've been observing it over the past few weeks (and years) and i don't like it. i've had a couple conversations with the kids about the importance of, like, reading in general (more so the importance of critical thought but i cited reading as one way to form your own opinions -> i don't think reading inherently gives you any social or intellectual advantage. but it can build a foundation for future ability to filter out unwanted opinions when reading biased writing)

and tbh (this is me being egotistical kinda) the 16-17 yr olds think i'm super cool lol because im tatted and have a ton of batshit insane life experience so, i do think they're kinda listening to my points. but it's worrying that no one's tried to make that argument for them before. and my opinion obviously isn't gonna, like, change their entire worldview or give them a sudden desire to be hyper-literate, but i do find it very scary how much easier it is to condition these kids. though social media, through the news, through anything; they genuinely do not have the ability to detect, let alone filter out, bias or propaganda.

again, this is a pretty tiny usamerican sample size (the teenagers in my neighborhood at my job lmao). but it's not just the white kids and it's not just the rich kids. it's happening to everyone (here, at least)

and i do think it's a lot worse than people are realizing. in 10-15 years, think about what most of the general adult population will look like. i don't feel good about it.

OH MY CHRIST. HOW IS THAT MORE SOULLESS THAN GETTING THEM OFF AMAZON (which is what i did!!)

anyway im pretty sure she’s been running her mouth abt me to our mutual acquaintances (not even friends lmao every1 at school is too violently liberal for me to make those) but idc she has no fucking spine anyway. willingly staying friends with liberal zionists and transphobes and racists bc she doesn’t want to ‘upend the status quo’. attempting to whitesplain the definition of racism to me. remaining friends with people who treat her like absolute garbage while shittalking them behind their backs. getting more upset over supposedly regifted biros (as if they were the only thing i gifted!) than any of the more above.
