After a huge success at this years Art Car Boot fair in London with Bruce McLean. Born in Glasgow in 1957, Louise Cattrell studied at Duncan of Jordanstone, Dundee and the Royal College of Art. She has exhibited widely including the Whitechapel, Fruitmarket Gallery, Mappin Gallery, the Towner Gallery and Beaux Arts.

She has held the Berwick Gymnasium Fellowship and has undertaken residencies across the world including Sri Lanka, Bulgaria, Ireland, USA, Switzerland and the Australian Outback. Held in public and private collections globally, her work is also owned by the Scottish Arts Council, MOD Whitehall and the Leukemia Unit QE2 Birmingham, UK.

"The opportunity to make a large scale screen print made me evaluate many of the ways in which print evolves from the process and how that responds to the way I make paintings. Printmaking has always been a part of how I develop work fusing drawing, tone and colour. My work is inspired by the natural landscape, in particular where the boundaries of sea, sky and land come together and depart. I make the paintings using thin layers of paint akin to watercolour in substance; using the transparencies of the screen printing film was a new way of building an image. Using early examples as a base, the context was developed through the application of watercolour as the ability of the movement in the paint responded to the ideas behind Sea Rock - where a rock within sight of the shore becomes a landmark and guide for those on both land and sea. Encompassed by all that the change of light and weather does to transform the known into the mysterious."

INTRODUCING: Danny Rolph

CCA GALLERIES is delighted to be working with world renowned artist DANNY ROLPH. 

Born in London in 1967, Danny Rolph has been a professional artist for 24 years and has gained international acclaim exhibiting all over the world. After completing his degree in Fine Art at the Winchester School of Art he went on to achieve an MA in Painting at the Royal College of Art. Since 2009 he has been a professor of Fine Art at Bucks News University and has taught at various other post-graduate institutions including the Royal Academy Schools and Royal College of Art. He is currently represented by 532gallery Thomas Jaeckel (NYC) and Barbara Davis Gallery (Houston). His work is held in many important private collections including Facebook HQ, Speyer Tishmann, Goldman Sachs, Duke and Duchess of Westminster as well as The Metropolitan Museum NYC and The Tate Gallery London. Rolph has been nominated for the Sovereign European Art Prize and Hamlyn Award and has received numerous prizes including the John Minton Travel Award, a Delfina Trust Award and the London Visual Arts Award. He was also appointed Scholar at the British School at Rome. He lives and works in London. 

At secondary school he discovered his love for art through an inspirational teacher, Iain Rutherford, who gave him a book on Mondrian and some oil paints and encouraged him to think with his hands.  Danny admires and is inspired by many artists including Uccello, Tiepolo, Tintoretto, De kooning, Georgia O’Keefe, Agnes Martin, Georg Baselitz, Sigmar Polke, Hilma of Klimt, Donald Judd, Jasper Johns, Thomas Noszkowski, Julian Schnabel, Laura Owens and Chris Ofili. 

World renowned for his multi-layered, abstract, colourful paintings, his seemingly chaotic work reflects the dynamism of his surroundings. He is inspired by the cities of London, New York and Rome as well as the deserts of West Texas and New Mexico, whose sunsets appear as a recurring motif in the background of his work. His colour choices are instinctive and deliberate and echo the environment around him. The artist continually questions surface tension and spatial relations via the mediums of Triplewall plastic and canvas surfaces, embracing doubt and discovery within the creative process. “I grew up in the sky, one hundred foot above City Road. The view from our kitchen window contained sunset and sunrises of the type that Tiepolo imagines populated by architectural silhouettes of St. Paul’s, The Old Bailey and the Post Office Tower.” – Danny Rolph, in reference to East Central exhibition at CNB Gallery, 2016

ENCOUNTER A new silkscreen by DANNY ROLPH produced in collaboration with CCA GALLERIES at WORTON HALL STUDIOS. Usually finding inspiration in philosophy, poetry and history, Rolph wanted to produce a print that related to his current interests in the studio. Having only produced one silkscreen edition before, Rolph saw creating this edition as an opportunity to allow him time to investigate the process further, which he found informative and exhilarating in equal measure. ‘Encounter’ will shortly be followed by another silkscreen edition. “Recently I swam in the Indian Ocean and encountered colours, animals and geology I had only previously seen on TV. The experience of being in such a stimulating, other worldly environment influenced my choices quite strikingly in ‘Encounter’. The objective in using these particular shapes, forms and colours was to communicate the experience I had in nature and to expand my visual vocabulary in a new direction.” - Danny Rolph

The Dazzle motif references Blake’s early work as well as his recent exploration of the ‘dazzle’ effect, which was originally a method of helping vessels avoid enemy detection in World War One.

'THE LIVING STONES' Solo Exhibition by Lucy Farley

We are delighted to be hosting British contemporary artist Lucy Farley's solo exhibition The 'Living Stones' from Friday 31st March to Friday 14th April. 

Our exhibition will showcase a collection of paintings and prints which are rooted in the observation and documentation - through repeated drawing, of particular land and seascapes in France, Spain and the South Coast of England. There is an emphasis on the history associated with a specific site, interspersed with the on going theme of man’s conflict with the elements.

The mystical and fantastical emanate from a chosen landscape and its geology, whilst the act of drawing becomes a meditative ritual on what and how something becomes sacred, as well as a portal to the souls of the characters who shaped it.

From the sketchbooks developed outside, the images adopt a more abstract language once they are reworked on a larger scale back in the studio. Printed and painted papers are often used in collaged layers to build up a densely worked surface over time.
