15 years-old Kate Moss photographed by Corinne Day for The Face, 1990. Photographer Corinne Day aims to capture ‘A teenage sexuality which I love. I want to make my images as documentary as possible, an image of life that is real.’ Day’s style rejects everything that fashion photography has traditionally stood for—glamour, sexiness, sophistication—by shooting skinny girls in cheap nylon knickers amidst squat-like squalor. Her anti-fashion attitude exemplifies the mood of the 1990s. Herself an ex-model, Day discovers her subjects in the street, preferring 'cocky English girls with a strong identity’. She launched the career of Kate Moss by photographing her aged fifteen for The Face, shown here. The best known of the 'grunge’ photographers, Day is credited with starting the trend for pre-pubescent-looking waifs. Vogue editor Alexandra Shulman, however, defended her work as 'a celebration of vulnerability and joyousness’. —Phaidon Editors, 1998 Moss recalled, “I was just having a laugh. Corinne just wanted to bring out everything that I hated when I was 15. My bow legs, the mole on my breast, the way I laughed”. #katemoss #90s #corinneday https://www.instagram.com/p/CNUS3y5pKQRldI7K5Z1VBdgkrw3md37kKTtZrM0/?igshid=pgaa6gnssugc
Artist Research: Corinne Day
For my inspiration for my pilot, I have looked at Diary by Corinne Day. The project looks at a collection of ten years' work and is a personal account of her life and friendships that she has experienced over a decade in London. Her images are extremely intimate moments that Day looks at without feeling intrusive with her camera.
Her best friend Tara is a central subject for Day in Diary. “Events in Tara's life - partying, sexual liaisons, illness and finally, motherhood - unfold in front of her friend's camera. Tara has an ambiguous beauty - sometimes fresh and pretty, sometimes sad or wasted, always natural and uninhibited - the perfect subject for Day's own understated photographic aesthetic.” Although my project doesn't have a visible subject in front of the camera like Tara, I want to create something similar with exploring the different themes of the life I am leading in lockdown.
