MP1 - Propsal Presentation Prep

At this point in the pilot project, I feel completely dispondent. I haven't solved the CO2 infrared question. I have began to dislike my images intensly and I do not know which direction to go in. I do however, want to stay with the concept of Carbon Capture and natural resources.

Reflection on the project:

After the feedback, I realise I need to work too my strengths and photograph what I enjoy.

For the Major Project 2, I am keeping the subject of seagrass and kelp/ seaweed restoration but abondoning infrared images and concentrate on the process of photodynthesis.

I prefer abstract work and therefore will arrange a microphotography induction with John Smith.

MP 1 - Photopolymer Workshop

The process is very similar to screen printing and cyanotypes but hte image is printed on a metal plate and the paint is handrolled onto it before placing on damp paper and running it through a printing press.

I really enjoyed the process and experiemented with a little colour to replicate an infra red image.

I really enjoyed this workshop. This could be a possibility for my final project. If so, I would look at sustainable inks and paper.

MP 1 - Interim Work Review

Presentation:

I included some of the wave images I had taken during the test shoot because I was not sure whether this would help or hinder the project.

In the feedback, it was one of these images that one of my peers said they liked but there was not a lot of other feedback from them.

It was suggested I look at the work of Tamsin Green This is How The Earth Must See Itself.

I am unhappy with these images and feel I need to ge to the bottom of the CO2/ Infrared question.

I did not enjoy taking these images at all. It wasn’t helped by the fact that I had to park at the side of a busy A road to quickly take them.

I do not feel that the man-made solution element of the project is working.

I am going to concentrate on the natrual resources that are moe efficient at capturing carbon.

Marine Plants - Seaweed

These images were taken with a Canon 5D Mark 1V:

Of the images I have taken during the test shoot of marine plants, this subject i.e. marine plants are the most appropriate to use in the Carbon Capture project.

It is important to me that the CO2 element is visualised, I will do further to try and understand this better.

This selection shows that the infrared turns organic organisms blue and the non-organic brown. They have a certain aesthetic that I like but they also look washed out. I could potentially change the project title to Blue Carbon to tie in the colour, but I am not sure that would make a difference.

I will investigate further the correct wavelength of CO2 in marine plants to capture the true colour, if possible.

Infrared Photography Experimentation

Carbon Capture

I researched how carbon is measured and established that it is by using infrared light or gas depending on whether from the atmosphere or underwater. This became my focus for using infrared photography for this project.

The location I choose for these images was Cornwall, I could spend a few days experimenting with different genres of photography; infrared, landscape, seascapes, marine plants, and geology on the Jurassic coast.

MP1 - Location Hunting

Seagrass Restoring Project North Wales

I visited North Wales to find the location for the Seagrass Restoration project, sadly the weather did not make for good hunting. I had arranged to stay wtih friends so did not want to cancel at the last minute.

It takes a day to drive there, I allowed a day location spotting, and a day to drive home. I had to return to home because I had booked a photography workshop in Cornwall the end of the week.

I did not think the Equipment Store Manager would appreciate me returning the Canon 5D Mark lV waterlogged.

This project is going to be weather dependant, but I will stay several days at the locations to avoid this happening.
