No here's the thing, actually, about bbc's Merlin.

It's that sometimes you're a Catholic kid trying so hard to love God and help your loved ones and do the right thing and you know, you know there's something different about you but you can't even name it because queerness is supposed to be evil, it's something people who don't love God do, and you've never done anything but try to love God so you can't be like that, you just can't.

Sometimes you are the oldest child in a family in crisis and it's no one's fault but it feels like it's your job to make sure everyone's okay, not make a fuss, take the blame, smooth things over, and turn around and smile because otherwise it might all fall to pieces.

You can't cry for you because there's no time and it's too selfish and you're in denial. But if there's a character who is hiding in plain sight and messing up and trying so hard to save the world with no idea how, maybe you can cry for him instead, because that's what stories are for, giving you something to cry for when your own story doesn't seem worthy of tears.

Maybe it saves you a little bit. Maybe it always will.
