Eric had known Bri since they were kids, inseparable through thick and thin. They shared secrets, dreams, and countless late-night conversations. But there was one secret Eric could never bring himself to reveal.
One crisp autumn evening, as they drove along a deserted country road, Eric found himself grappling with the weight of centuries. His mind raced with memories of ancient civilizations, lost loves, and the ever-present loneliness of immortality. The silence between them grew heavy, punctuated only by the hum of the car engine and the occasional rustle of leaves in the wind.
"Are you okay, Eric? You seem kinda... how do I say this... distracted," Bri finally broke the silence, concern etched on her face.
Eric glanced at her, his heart heavy with the knowledge he was about to share. He took a deep breath, his voice barely above a whisper. "Yeah, just got a lot on my mind," he muttered, his fingers fiddling with the dial to lower the radio's volume.
Bri studied him for a moment, sensing there was more to his distraction than he was letting on. "Actually, can I tell you something? I don't know if you're gonna believe me," Eric continued, his words hesitant yet determined.
Bri nodded encouragingly, her curiosity piqued. "You can tell me anything, Eric. You know that."
Taking another deep breath, Eric turned his gaze back to the road ahead, trying to find the right words. "Bri, you know how we've always joked about being soulmates, about knowing each other forever?"
Bri nodded again, a small smile tugging at the corners of her lips. "Yeah, of course."
"Well, it's... it's more than that," Eric began slowly, his voice tinged with a mixture of apprehension and relief at finally sharing his burden. "I... I'm not like everyone else. I... I'm immortal."
Bri's eyes widened in surprise, her mind struggling to grasp the enormity of what Eric had just revealed. "Immortal? Like... like you can't die?"
Eric nodded, his eyes finally meeting hers, searching for understanding and acceptance. "Yes. I've lived for centuries, seen things you wouldn't believe, experienced more than any one person should."
Bri was silent for a long moment, processing everything Eric had said. Finally, she spoke, her voice filled with a mix of awe and disbelief. "But... how? Why didn't you ever tell me before?"
Eric sighed, a weight lifting from his shoulders as he finally shared this secret that had burdened him for so long. "I was afraid, Bri. Afraid you wouldn't believe me, that you'd think I was crazy. And... afraid of losing you, if you couldn't accept who I really am."
Tears welled up in Bri's eyes as she reached out to grasp Eric's hand. "Oh, Eric. I believe you. I've always believed in you. And... I'm not going anywhere."
They drove on in silence, the weight of Eric's secret now shared between them, strengthening their bond in a way neither of them could have imagined. For the first time in centuries, Eric felt a glimmer of hope that perhaps, with Bri by his side, immortality wouldn't be so lonely after all.
Is this good???
